Thyroid Surgery
The human thyroid gland performs important regulatory functions in the body
. It is the largest of the endocrine glands in the body, and it controls how quickly the body uses energy and makes proteins. It is important to understand that if you are having some of these symptoms you may not be experiencing a thyroid storm at all. Instead, you could be experiencing an anxiety (panic) attack, possibly also related to increase thyroid level or other factors. But, it will not involve the high ever of the storm. There a number of potential diseases of the thyroid, including Hashimoto's disease, Graves' disease, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. All of these involve the thyroid producing too much or too little thyroid hormone.
Medical experts have found that a malfuctioning thyroid can also contribute to other malladies such as heart disease and that explains why any disorders affecting this gland need to be taken seriously. Since the thyroid is charge with producing chemicals which ensure that the body's metabolic processes are optimized, a disruption in the producing of these chemicals can affect vital organs causing a life-threatening scenario. Of the three main types of thyroid surgery, total thyroidectomy is the most common and is typically done for the treatment of thyroid cancer, but may also be performed on patients who have Grave's disease which causes hyperthyroidism or when a patient has goiter which is the enlargement of the thyroid gland.
Fortunately, the likelihood that a patient who has undergone surgery on the thyroid gland will have to take Vitamin D or calcium pills for the rest of their lives is very low - much less than 1%. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that you or the person you know who has undergone this type of surgery will require these supplements. When serious thyroid issues arise, your doctor may recommend that part or all of your thyroid be removed via surgery. Once the surgery is complete, your thyroid will no longer be equipped to produce the same amounts (or any) of thyroid hormone that it did in the past. At this point, you may ask, "Will I be able to lose weight after thyroid surgery?".
For smaller procedures such as a thyroid lobectomy, you may be discharged from the hospital the day after surgery. For more extensive procedures, you may go home when the fluid from the drain tube has significantly decreased and when your doctor can confirm that your blood calcium levels have returned to normal.
