Tiger Hills: Already In News Before It Was Published

Tiger Hills was already in the news much before the book was released

, mostly due to the huge advance paid to a debutante novelist Sarita Mandanna by Penguin India. The readers would not find much online discussion on the book. Those who have been in know, say its like Indian Gone with the Wind and The Thord Birds combined together. Tiger Hills has a strong sense of place whereas the scope of the novel is already clear from our description given in the previous sentence.

Love Story with a Difference

The author manages to surprise the readers the way she treats the story, as it is a love story with a difference, and the elegantly crafted literature will simply take your breath away. Forget about the contemporary fiction, this is not your regular, easygoing narrative. Still, this is a wonderful book. Period.

Complete World within the Book

Sarita Mandanna has managed to create a complete world within her 460 pages, as there are complicated social dramas within, and then there are some deep emotions. The interaction between the humans is dominated by the landscape, but thats fair, since Coorg is the place she belongs to. Sarita Mandanna writes with a lot of nostalgia but she does manage to cast a spell on the readers, a hypnotic one.

South India Is Still Close To Sarita

Sarita Mandanna currently lives in Canada but South India is still as close to her as it gets, so close the readers feel a sense of duty to spread the word about the beauty of the prose (and the place). All the characters play out their roles in the coffee plantations and undulating hills of Coorg. The story begins in 1878 and ends at the beginning of World War II. The beginning of the Tiger Hills doesnt seem that natural, the heroine often appears to be too perfect in the book. The element that has been portrayed most beautifully in the book is the relationship between the people, land and animals of Coorg.

Brought Up As a Spoilt Child

Devi was the only girl child born in her family in last six decades, and it was natural for the family to bring her up as a spoilt child. Her grandmother and loving parents made sure all her whims were met. She became friends with Devanna and both of them were very close to each other. The moment Devi saw Machu, she decided she couldnt marry anyone else due to his macho personality (he hunted a tiger). Devanna on the other hand, cannot love any woman other than Devi. Due to the emotional undercurrents, some scenes are very difficult to read but keep reading (persist) and youll survive. Youll be glad you did.
