Tights - Ideal For Ballet And More!

Tights have been in use for many centuries and in fact started out as a fashionable item of clothing for men

. They would use them for horseback riding as they were very form fitting and the material of the tights often correlated to the social status of the man wearing them. In the modern day, however, tights are very much associated with female clothing and come in a variety of colours, designs and materials.

Tights are usually made from a stretchy material like Lycra, nylon or cotton, so that they become very small when unworn but can stretch over an entire leg when they are in use. The thickness of tights is described in denier. The higher the denier of the tights, the thicker they will be. Low denier tights are more opaque and delicate.

Usually, tights go around the foot like a sock and come all the way to the waist like trousers, however recent fashion trends have led to them becoming available like leggings, where the feet are cut off or having a stirrup that goes under the foot. Athletes sometimes use tights like this, for instance, Kobe Bryant started a trend with the NBA players as he wore tights under his basketball shorts.

Another place where tights are very popular, other than sports or athletics, is dance. Ballet in particular. Ballet tights have always been a staple part of a dancers uniform, even in other dance disciplines. Leotards are often worn and tights are worn underneath them to create a seamless look for the dancer. Ballet tights are usually light in colour in order to blend with the entire outfit the dancer is wearing. However as the skin tone of dancers varies, ballet tights are also available in different shades of tan and also grey and black. As dance costumes and different coloured leotards are also popular, ballet tights and general dance tights are available in various bright colours like green, blue, pink and purple. Recent fashion trends have lead to these brightly coloured tights becoming popular among the general public, especially in the footless style.

When dancers are practicing or rehearsing, they need versatility, so some ballet tights are convertible. This means that they have a hole on the sole of the foot so that a dancer can wear them over their feet or pull them back to make them footless.

When dancers are performing in shows, sometimes they need to add a little something to their costumes, so ballet tights are available in different styles such as fishnet, rhinestone decorated or other interesting patterns. The difference between having normal patterned tights to having proper dance ballet tights is that the sole of the garment is padded with a piece of material instead of having the fishnet material at the base or any other material that may inconvenience a dancer when they are moving around.

Because of the nature of dance and of ballet, dancers need to wear items of clothing that are versatile and flexible therefore allowing them to move around easily. For this reason, ballet tights and other dance leg wear such as leggings and footless tights will always be popular as they are such a convenient and fundamental part of a dancer's uniform.
