Tilt Wash Replacement Windows - The Big Oversell?
If you have seen one replacement window presentation in your life you have probably
seen the amazing and outstanding tilt wash feature where you can tilt the sashes of your replacement window inside the house so you will never have to wash your windows outside again (oh the horror!) The presentation looks flawless... you simply touch, tilt, clean and you are on your way with shiny new windows. Not so fast my friend! Before you go ga-ga over the idea that you can clean your windows every day with ease, lets look at the tilt wash window in real world.
Small sample windows are easy to tilt...how big are your windows?
It looks so easy to tilt that sample replacement window in and clean, trust me it is. Now think about the windows you are replacing. Are they all 2w x 3 h? If not, you are going to have to lower and lift some pretty large pieces of glass to get the window in position to clean. Yes we are talking about 3 x 3 squares, 50 lbs give or take. They are big, bulky, and gravity wants to bring them down as fast as it can. I have lifted a lot of windows, these arent light.
Location, Location, Location...
There you are in your living room and you are ready to clean your awesome tilt wash windows. You have your cleaner and your towel and those windows are done baby! Hold on a second, who put that couch in front of that window? Why is that end table where I have to move it to tilt the window sash into clean? A simple replacement window cleaning has now turned into a full blown furniture moving exercise. Yeah great, you dont have to clean windows outside in the heat, but you are sweating you rear off shoving furniture around. Before you jump on the tilt wash train, think about your real life situation. Do you really want to overpay for a feature that requires a moving company when you want to clean?
Your window treatments are awesome, now take them down
Many times after we are done with replacing windows in San Antonio, the homeowners run out and get the new window treatments to match their awesome replacement windows. You might already have yours in place to cover up your old ugly windows. Regardless, the window treatment is there and it is not going to move out of the way by itself. Heres the routine: you have to raise the dusty blinds (which you now need to clean because you see how dirty they are). Now you have to prop those out as you juggle the upper sash to lower it for cleaning. Wait, now there is the curtain hanging down that needs to be set aside. If you can manage to get all of that clear and clean the window good for you... now you have to juggle it all again to get the sash back in place. Now repeat the process for the other 10 windows in your house.
Cup holders and tilt wash windows, now you know
So now that I have stripped the veil of greatness from the tilt wash window, why do you have to have it jammed down your throat at every replacement window presentation? I liken it to the cup holder when buying a new car. Have you ever had the sales person tell you the SUV has 20 cup holders and your eyes glaze over at the thought of having the ability to store twenty beverages at one time? (yeah you have) In my opinion the tilt wash feature is something used to try and punch up the window sales pitch.
The truth is that replacement windows dont have that many exciting features so the tilt wash action just looks impressive when trying to sell you windows. Dont be surprised if you see numerous San Antonio Window Companies trotting out the tilt wash & dont be surprised if you get the twinge of WOW when you see it.
The choice is ultimately yours
When deciding upon replacement windows, it is up to each individual to decide if the additional features are really worth it in the long run. If you are willing to pay a bit more for the feature (yes, you do pay more for the feature) you can have the ease of cleaning described above as well as the freedom to lower the top sash of the window. Ultimately you have to decide if the feature is worth the cost. Twenty cup holders anyone?
