Time For A Pain Clinic? Understanding Different Pain Types
We have all experienced headaches, sore muscles
, or back pain at some point in our life. On most occasions when we experience pain, a simple over-the-counter medication will take care of the problem. However, what can you do when the pain lingers and starts to affect your everyday life? Maybe you have chronic migraines, lasting problems from an accident, or any other pain issue that will not relent. You can greatly improve your quality of life by visiting a pain clinic in your area. Some common ailments that would benefit from a pain management routine are: back pain such as a slipped or herniated disc, joint pain resulting from a previous injury, and migraine headaches.
A slipped or herniated disc happens when the disc between the bones of the spine becomes worn, splits, or ruptures.
The disc does not actually "slip" out from between the vertebrae. When the disc is injured the gel-like material (nucleus pulposus) inside the disc leaks out. The disc can no longer act as a buffer and causes stress to the spine. This can result in long term pain that many people would rather manage than have surgery on the spine. Most people who suffer from this condition are between 30-50 years old, because as we get older the fluid content and elasticity of the nucleus pulposus decrease making the disc more brittle and prone to injury.
Joint pain is another common problem facing people today. Injuries and disease are general causes for joint problems. The most widespread disease that affects the joints is arthritis. Arthritis is a term often used to describe a great number of diseases that affect the joints. Pain and pressure is caused from inflammation and excess fluid buildup. Sudden or long term injuries can also lead to pain in the joints. The knee can be knocked out of alignment by feet or hip problems and the resulting change in your walk can lead to knee damage, or your knee joints can simply wear down eventually through the course of an active life. Alternatively, a sudden jarring blow can wrench the knee out of its regular range of motion. This often happens as the result of a sports injury.
Finally, migraines are an affliction that can sometimes cause great suffering. A migraine is a neurological syndrome. Classic symptoms of migraines include a severe pulsating headache, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to sounds and light. These symptoms can last anywhere from a few hours to 72 hours. Migraines often only affect one side of the head at a time.
These are just a few examples of problems that could benefit from pain management in a pain clinic. Pain clinics can offer a wide array of treatment options for you to cope with your pain. Pain medications such as anti-inflammatory are often used.
Physical therapy is another common treatment used by pain clinics. For example, many back pain problems can often be solved by using specific exercises to target the muscles in and near the back. Psychotherapy can be used to help you cope with pain without the use of narcotics by teaching you coping skills and relaxation techniques. You do not have to suffer with pain, make an appointment at your local pain clinic today.
