Light houses have been seen as a pillar of help for many years. They are iconic as they are perceived as beacons of hope and safety which is true in some sense. Lighthouses were and in some places are still used to guide ships safely to harbours, preventing them from colliding into various hazards such as coastlines, shoals and reefs. They can also be used to help aerial services at sea. But due to the recent technical advancements such like in navigational aids/devices the tendency to use a lighthouse has decreased.
This magnificent structures have been around for many years and you will find that they date back to the Roman times. In ancient times before lighthouses existed mariners would guide ships by lighting fires on hilltops. The fire was a simple means of increasing visibility and it was this practice that became the blueprint for lighthouses.
The Lighthouses we know and see today were inspired by the Eddystone Lighthouse which has had four iterations of the structure. It is located off the shore in Devon, England. The first version was built by Henry Winstanley right at the end of the 17th century. This lighthouse stood for five years before it was devastated by the great storm of 1703. The second was designed by John Rudyard which saw a wooden structure built around a core of brick and concrete, this was first lit 21 years after the first one in 1709. But just like the first met its end by unfortunate circumstances in 1755. The top of the lantern was caught on fire from one of the candles that was used to illuminate the light. The three keepers try with all their might to stop the fire but had to be rescued, one of them died due to lead poisoning.
The third one which is the iconic one in terms of structure and design was crafted by John Smeaton. He developed the shape from an oak tree and built the structure out of granite blocks. He also developed a special type of concrete that was able to set in water called hydraulic lime and also found a way to secure the blocks by using dovetail joints and marble dowels. The light of this variation of the lighthouse was lit on 16 October 1759. It was removed inn 1877 when it became apparent that the rock underneath the structure had been eroded, that caused the lighthouse to shake when huge waves hit the structure. It was rebuilt in Plymouth Hoe, in Plymouth where it still stands today as a testament to the defining building.
The removal of the lighthouse was over seen by William Tregarthen Douglass who was the son of the man who designed the fourth and current lighthouse structure. James Douglass looked over Robert Stevenson's developments of Smearton's techniques and use them guide lines to build the light house we see today. It was first lit in 1882 and was first automated in 1982.
Ever since Smeartons lighthouse there have been many that have been inspired by the design and structure. It became the blueprint for lighthouses all over the world. You would see new ones being erected in a similar fashion in places such as America. Where a few places went Lighthouse crazy such as Michigan which has 150 lighthouses.
Cape Cod is a island in the state of Massachusetts that has them in abundance all closely knitted together. People come here during the summer sampling the best it has to offer with the various Cape Cod Rentals and summer homes available at their disposal. There are ten that you could easily visit due to the close proximately they have of each other. The lighthouses were erected due to the constant moving shoals which was due beacons being put up to warn ships of the ever changing shoals long before the lighthouse were put up. Many of the lighthouses are still in working order such as Highland Light, Nauset Light, Chatham Light, Race Point Light, and Nobska Light and you could do tour the whole of Cape and see them all as they are fantastic structure with beautiful backdrops.
