In times of economic difficulty, there is often an assumption that there will never be any difficulty finding staff

One of the best benefits without any outlay is the use of flexible time or flexi-time as it is frequently referred to. This has many advantages for the employer as well as the employee. For example, when an employee has a doctor's or dentist's appointment, they will be able to have it in their own time rather than their employer's. Similarly, domestic emergencies or appointments for children need not eat into the working day.

Staff can be encouraged to take time off at less busy times of the year and work extra hours when particularly required. However, instead of the business having to pay overtime rates, they simply owe some time off to their employees. In fact, the employers can easily adjust the system to ensure that they have cover when it is needed.

In order to make flexible time work as efficiently as possible, it is important to have an equally flexible time recording system. This allows data collection which can be useful in planning workloads.
