Time To Reflect?

Winter is finally over

Winter is finally over. The birds are singing, the sun is warm, and we are once again happy to be outside. Spring is also a good time for self-reflection. What better time to sit by the lake (before the mosquitoes have had time to take hold), the warm breeze on our face (before summer's heat turns it into a scorching wind), and assess where we are, where we want to be and life in general.

We are often pushed to be busy. Always busy. Time to think and reflect is often is short supply. When the opportunity arises, we think we should be doing something more productive, like making calls, or setting our goals. In fact, taking the time for self-reflection can actually improve our business. We can become more focused, more content. Often we lose ourselves in our business. The routine day after day can suppress our thoughts and ideas. By taking the time to reflect on life, business, and ourselves, we can relax and open our minds to the possibilities. You never know where that kind of thinking can take you.

Sometimes people are afraid to take too much time to think. Sometimes when we think we discover things we have been trying to hide from. We don't want to think about ourselves, how things are going, or how we want things to go because it is just too painful. By not taking the time to reflect, we become trapped. Deep down we know there is a problem, but we don't want to think about or, worse yet, reflect on it. By keeping constantly busy we avoid the necessity of facing the issue head on.

But reflection does not have to focus on problems. Reflection can focus totally on what is good. You can think your wildest dreams, or where you want to go. There is always something good, even if it is only the fact that you can sit outside with the warm sun on your face. Try not to let the thoughts of everything you need to do rob you of the relaxation and thoughts that you need.

Don't be afraid to take the time for reflection. Use the time to reenergize, redirect, or just enjoy. Don't get distracted and agitated by over-thinking. Don't think about tomorrow or even the next hour, simply live in the present moment.

"Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night." -Edgar Allan Poe
