Timeline Of Game Consoles

The first ever known game for consoles was called PONG, which was based on Baer's original idea of creating a tennis game. During this time, it is almost impossible to find a pub where PONG is not played. Atari owns the title PONG and this was the most popular game during 1972-1976.

Bally was the number one competitor of Atari during that time, and in 1977 they released Bally Professional Arcade. Although it offers better graphics quality, the price of the console is a lot higher compared to Atari's PONG, hence, it was not able to catch the interest of people.

In 1982-1984, the creations of game cartridges for game consoles were at its peak. However, these creations were substandard cartridges resulting to a great decline in the industry of games and consoles. A lot of developers, manufacturers, and publisher had to shut down due to decline in the industry. One of the few games to survive this collapse was the Colevision of Coleco.

After the crash in 1982-1984, Nintendo revolutionized the world of gaming by releasing a high-powered 8-bit microprocessor. This made game consoles available to every home; hence, the legend of Nintendo still lives until the time of this writing. During that time, the first ever hand held game console called Gameboy is also released.

The next thing that happened was the release of the more powerful game consoles featuring a 16-bit microprocessors. The dominant game consoles during that time were Sega and Nintendo. Although Atari attempted to reenter the game console industry, they were not able to catch the attention people and soon failed.

The next character of the story is Sony with their Playstation. This was the first game console to ever use CDs for games and was sold $100 cheaper compared to Sega Saturn which was its number one competitor during that time.

Powered with the technology that we have today, game consoles are far different from the consoles of the past. Who knows what will happen to this industry after another 20 or 30 years?
