Times are tricky Don't be a victim

In organizations, new employees arrive and depart. With the rules being stringent, employees cannot play too smart when it comes to giving resignation. The assigned project or the agreements, bonds signed for completion within a stipulated time, stop them from leaving the organization.

As attrition is not our point of view, let's create three characters and analyze their behavior in different times and result. The three characters are Sheep, Rabbit and Bull Dog. Sheep's designation is middle level manager in the company called "Brilliant but blind". He is doing well and survived with a wife, two children. Sheep is a kind of person where he sees an intelligent within him and assumes all other people are dumb. Whatsoever, people in the organization were giving equal importance to him and Sheep never got the kind of recognition he wanted. His ego was hurt. In these frustrating times, a new employee enters the organization. His name is Rabbit obedient, humble, polite and fast learner. When he is asked to report under Sheep, Sheep accepts him with pleasure when he receives a polite wish of his life. Rabbit, as he is new to the organization he takes both compliments as well as heat from his boss (Sheep). As time passes Sheep gets convinced that he is passive, innocent guy learning things in the organization and trusts him as his favorite assistant.

A man cannot judge when his time goes wrong. One day Sheep and Rabbit will be working on a project. This project largely will be a brain child of Sheep and little contributions of Rabbit cannot be neglected. Whenever Sheep spends time with Rabbit he feels as the king. Because Sheep has a guy (Rabbit), is ready to appreciate every task idea given by Sheep. So, the feeling of "Boss" was flooding Sheep's personality. In the time of delight, Sheep gets a call from other department he asks Rabbit to work more on this project and report as soon as he returns. Sheep leaves the scene. The company's general manager happens to enter the Sheep cabin. His name is Bull dog. He never sits quiet. Not sitting quiet doesn't mean he is laborious. Bull Dog is a man who never stops judging people, their effectiveness, hard working attitude etc. As Bull Dog looks at some blue prints, materials spread he gets curious and orders Rabbit to explain. Rabbit explains everything in a clear manner and wins accolades from Bull Dog. As Sheep was not at the scene Bull Dog assumes the project as Rabbit's contribution. Bull Dog is impressed and wants to promote Rabbit as a manager after the appraisal. After this judgment, Sheep walks in and Bull Dog asks him about the deadlines. Here, Sheep starts reflecting his boss' attitude in front of Rabbit. Instead of being humble and polite in front of Bull Dog he sticks his head high to show Rabbit's junior status and Sheep tries dominate the scene by playing hero. But actually Sheep has done nothing wrong and the work was his contribution. Here for Sheep's misery or misfortune, Bull Dog has understood the matter in a totally different way perceiving that Sheep is copying or dominating, exploiting his junior rabbit. At the end of the day, this gesture of sheep doesn't go well with Bull Dog and he decides to pay back in time of appraisal.

So, final take home for Rabbit: Good for him as Bull Dog has identified him; unknowingly Sheep is ready to give a grand appraisal report to the department appreciating him. Rabbit will get a good increment.

Sheep doesn't have any clue about sword swinging above his head. His appraisal may take a hit as a consequence of Bull Dog's wrath. After some time Sheep may get still demotivated, his relationship with Rabbit may collapse because of professional jealousy resulting in isolation of Sheep in the organization. This article recommends that any individual in the organization should judge the situation before they act. Developing trust is complex but it can be done. Sustaining it is a major challenge. "Don't try to be smart when the time is bad" is the take home of this article. I am not blaming a subordinate or boss; it is situations that retain the power to make man cunning, greedy, selfish etc. to counter this people in the organization have to be alert.
