Timing Your Smoke: Considerations In Cigar Smoking

Cigar smoking offers immense enjoyment and relaxation

. However, for those new to the hobby, it can be a little confusing. Many new smokers wonder about things like how to light their smokes correctly, or how to cut the ends properly. One of the most common questions asked is, "How long should I wait to ash my cigar?" This is an important question, as the frequency with which you ash will certainly affect your enjoyment of the smoke.

One of the first things to understand about cigar ash is the fact that its presence is important. You don't want to ash constantly, as the more ash there is, the cooler the cigar will smoke. The cooler your cigar smoke is, the less heat and harshness your throat will have to deal with. Obviously, you want to enjoy a cool, relaxing cigar, not a hot, painful, uncomfortable experience.

Of course, you cannot wait too long to ash, either. If you let your cigar ash build up too long, it will fall. Chances are good that ash isn't going to be harmless, either. Most cigar smokers find that it winds up all over their shirt or their pants. Alternatively, it might fall on the floor, which can have bad consequences of its own. Cigar ash almost always has some heat still in it (from the ash nearest the burning tobacco), and this can burn carpeting or vinyl flooring. Of course, ash all over the floor is unsightly all on its own, as well.

Perhaps the best advice about knocking the ash on your cigar is to wait until it's about an inch long. Once you have this amount built up, carefully ash your cigar in your ashtray. One inch of ash offers plenty of cooling for the cigar, but anything over this length is in danger of falling with the slightest movement of your hand, the act of smoking or even a good breeze.

Of course, some smokers prefer to ash their cigars before the one-inch mark. This is really all about personal preference. You'll need to smoke for a little while before you can determine what your preference is, a warm smoke, hot smoke or cool smoke. In addition, the length of your ash will somewhat be dictated by where you are, and the reason you're smoking. For example, if you're smoking to rate a cigar, a cooler smoke than usual might be in order to get all the flavors.
