Tinnitus Is An Increasing Problem For Veterans

, veterans are experiencing a higher rate of incidence than the rest of the people. Regrettably, veterans often cannot get the kind of care for tinnitus that they need. In the first place, because so many other, more serious veterans' health issues take precedence, money has not been allocated for tinnitus treatment. Moreover, tinnitus is difficult to diagnose properly because the symptoms can only be detected by the afflicted person himself or herself. Consequently, even though tinnitus can be a serious condition, our veterans often are not getting the treatment they need, despite the service they have provided selflessly for their country.

For the most part our veterans are developing tinnitus caused by acoustic trauma, often called noise-induced tinnitus. Veterans have often been placed in very noisy environments, whether in training or in actual combat situations. Although their experience may not have been prolonged exposure to very loud sound, sudden exposures to intense levels of noise, though brief in period, can do severe damage to the minute sound receivers of the inner ear. Acoustic trauma is well known to be the leading cause of tinnitus. Most people who are subject to loud sounds, such as those who work in machine shops, airports, or who attend loud night clubs or rock concerts can use ear plugs to shield their ears. Military personnel, however, usually are not able to use protective devices to prevent ear damage. In training and in combat they must maintain optimum awareness of what is going on around them. As a consequence, veterans are turning up with tinnitus more frequently than other people.

This difficulty that our veterans find themselves in needs to be taken seriously, because it will not go away by itself. Granting that tinnitus is usually only perceptible to the victim, nevertheless, it can cause a lot of grief. Constant ear ringing or buzzing can drain life energy, disrupt relationships, make sleeping difficult, and in general make life miserable. It can be hard to appreciate how awful living with tinnitus can be, unless one experiences it for herself or himself. Our veterans need not resign themselves to just existing with tinnitus, because remedies are available for alleviating symptoms in most circumstances.

Although some are better than others, many possible remedies for tinnitus are available today. Sometimes certain pharmaceuticals are tried, such as anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, and anti-anxiety drugs. While such drugs can suppress symptoms, they can also produce unwanted side effects. Sound therapy, involving white noise that can help to mask tinnitus, is another common remedy. Some people have found relief using various herbal or homeopathic remedies. Various other alternative treatments are also possible. Very often, noised-induced tinnitus can be treated effectively by combining other remedies with a natural holistic treatment procedures. By building up and improving the immune defense system, holistic treatment helps by encouraging the body to heal itself, thereby reducing or eliminating the tinnitus symptoms.

Veterans should have access to such treatment possibilities when required. However, at this moment the problem of tinnitus among veterans is largely overlooked. Since many of the health problems that veterans face are perceived to be more serious, in effect tinnitus often falls through the cracks. Still, our veterans who have given so much for their country deserve tinnitus treatment to improve their quality of life.
