Tips And Advice Egypt Culture
If you spend your time only around the Egypt property resorts
, you run the risk of only encountering two types of Egyptians.
These are pushy salesmen trying to con tourists into buying overpriced souvenirs, and sleazy man who are looking for a saucy Western girlfriend. However, this is not a balanced cross section of what Egyptians are like, and as soon as you venture outside of the resorts you will meet genuine, kind people with no ulterior motives.
If you are the proud owner of a new property in Egypt and you are getting ready to move there, here are a few things to remember about Egyptian culture:
- 90% of the 80 million inhabitants of Egypt are Sunni Muslims. Most Egyptians do not consider themselves 'Arab', but rather North African or even descended from the Pharaohs.
- Egyptians are friendly people, and will likely welcome you into their country. They are curious, and you might find yourself being stared at, which can be unnerving but simply smile and wave to break the ice.
- Personal space might be different than you are used to, so be prepared for people to speak at a much closer distance than you might be comfortable with. Try not to back away, which might be considered rude.
- The left hand is considered unclean in Egyptian culture, so avoid using it to eat, gesture or shake hands.
- When in Egypt, it is a good idea to obey the cultural norms by dressing appropriately. Keep your shoulders and knees covered, and do not wear anything tight, low cut, or revealing. Although this is not a law, it is simply a sign of respect and will result in you being treated in a much more positive way.
- Alcohol is not illegal in Egypt, but it is forbidden by the Muslim religion and so 90% of the population do not drink. This means that you might have a little bit of trouble finding alcohol after moving to your real estate in Egypt. The major western hotels will have a bar, such as Hilton and Sheraton. You will have better luck if you own an Egypt property in the large cosmopolitan city of Cairo. Remember that during Ramadan, all major breweries will shut down and alcohol will be nearly impossible to obtain.
- When entering any mosque, always remove your shoes and place the soles together, because it is bad luck for the soles of the shoes to be pointing at someone. When seated, keep your feet on the ground as it is offensive to show the bottoms of your feet to someone.
Good luck, and enjoy settling into your new home in Egypt!
