Tips And Techniques For Wax Candle Making At Home

. But after you've churned out batches of the same molded/scented candles, you're aching to try something different! No doubt, you've also come across some puzzling results that need to be resolved. Your candles have a depression in the center around the wick. This is caused by evaporation. The liquid wax cools faster at the sides of the mold than at the center. Here, the wax continues to evaporate creating a hollow. In tall pillar candles, these can actually look pretty sometimes, but if you want a smooth, professional look, you need to "top off" your candle. Re-melt the same candle wax and pour just enough to make it level all around.

Sometimes your candle seems to be the wrong color, or there's hardly any fragrance when the candle is lit. Use only dye chips meant for candle making; crayons are not meant to color candles. To test for color, scoop a little of the melted wax and pour it into a miniature mold - ice cube tray, egg cup - at least 1/2 inch deep. Cool 3-5 minutes in the freezer and check. Add more color to obtain a deeper shade but if it's too dark now, charge it to experience. Use only candle making fragrance oils and add them just before pouring. Keeping them on the heat will simply cook off the scent. Avoid the temptation to add more fragrance oil the next time around. There's just so much oil candle wax can absorb; excess oil can result in oily or "weepy" candles.

You can re-cycle your less-than-perfect candles by cutting them in chunks with a heated knife. Save the wick for re-use if you wish. Position a tabbed wick in a mold - a milk carton or a glass jar - and fill it with the chunks making sure to press them against the sides of the mold. Melt some raw wax and pour into the mold, tapping the sides to release air bubbles. Released from the mold or left in the glass jar, this makes a pretty candle.

A nice trick for leftover wax is to pour them into a prepared mold with the tabbed wick hot glued to the bottom. This time, balance the mold on something steady so it stays tilted as you pour in the wax. Next time you have leftover wax, tilt the mold in a different direction at a different angle. No two candles will ever be the same.
