Tips For A Foolproof Home Renovation Experience

Embarking on home renovation takes creativity

, talent, and organization. It also takes a bit of patience. Tearing up old carpet, knocking down walls, and refinishing kitchen cabinets... it's enough to make any home do it yourself pro get giddy with anticipation. If you are starting an Arlington home improvement project or a Great Falls home renovation here in the Washington DC area, here are some helpful tips to keep you sane throughout the process.

Home Renovation Tips

1-Plan carefully. You need to clearly visualize what you want done. In reality shows on TV, this step takes mere moments, but in real life, the planning often takes months. Take the time to get it right. Draw things out and make sure everyone involved in the project understands the whole scope of the project.

2-Determine which projects will be done in which order, and how long each project will take. Overestimate how much time each project will take, which will give you a few days off between projects if things go smoothly and if there are problems you will have the time to handle unforeseen issues and still stay on deadline.

3-If you will be living out of the home while projects are ongoing, keeping the remodeling to certain wings of the home will make things more livable.

4-Hire an architect and/or general contractor, if needed, early on. Allow them to get in on the planning and suggest ideas. Ask them for help with building permits or safety issues, if you need help with them.

5-Create a master schedule and give a copy to all persons involved in the remodeling process. You will need to make sure that contract workers arrive in the proper order (builders, painters, window treatment designers, kitchen cabinet installers, etc.). If things are not well organized from the start, they get more and more muddled the further you get into the project.

6-Determine what materials you will be using. Don't wait until you've torn up the old linoleum to decide whether you will be putting in hardwood or tile. Purchase necessary supplies early and have them ready before renovation begins. If you shop in advance and watch for sales, you can sometimes find what you're looking for at a better deal.

7-Consult with a professional interior designer and get ideas and feedback on your plans, if possible. If you and your partner or roommates can't agree on aesthetic issues, hire a designer and turn over the reins. It's better to be annoyed with a designer than with your spouse or roommate.
