Tips For A Successful Internship

Internships aren't just another obligatory task to check off your list on your way to college graduation

. They provide a wonderful opportunity for you to check out a workplace in your chosen field and see how you like it. On your first day, try to take the pressure off of yourself and shed any intimidation you might feel. If you make a mistake or two don't be too hard on yourself. Interns don't exactly hold the keys to the kingdom, so any mistakes that you make probably won't cause too many problems. Below are a few suggestions on how to put your best foot forward:

1. Take mental inventory of those around you. As soon as you walk in the door on the first day, look around and take the pulse of what you see. Are the employees comfortable and easy-going as they go about their business? Is the environment formal and quiet? Do your best to match the tone of those around you and blend in.

2. Be polite to everyone you come across. An administrative assistant might not hold the key to your future, but she can certainly put a bug in the ear of someone who might. Most workplace environments have a definite pecking order, but you should treat everyone as if you are there to make their job easier. Politeness goes a long way in opening doors.

3. Graciously accept all duties. Let's face it; a college intern is the low man on the totem pole. While you may aspire to move into the corner office with a private bathroom, accept the fact that there are many necessary steps before you can get there. Make coffee, run errands and plant yourself at the photo copy machine if asked. At this stage in your life, you are learning a business from the ground up. A smile never hurts either.

4. As the internship draws to an end, take what you've learned and consider whether or not you'd like to come back for a paid position after graduation. If so, don't be afraid to let it be known that you are interested. If they liked what they saw in you, they might be willing to wait for you to complete your college education.

Once you're back on campus (or at home if you go to an online college), be sure to send a thank-you note to your direct supervisor. If there was anyone else who was especially helpful to you during your internship, send them something as well. You can use these people as references later when you are looking for a job, so keep in touch as time passes by.
