Tips For Adding Art To Your Home

When artists first begin to study their craft

, many of them go through years of training to study the techniques of previous artists before them. After years of study they have a firm grasp on what it means to work in their medium and then they set out to break every rule they ever learned to create unique works that are all their own. This technique also works with displaying art as well. There are many rules and guidelines that designers learn about what a good display of artwork in a home should look like and once you understand all the rules, you can break them and create a wonderful home display. If you are just beginning and are hanging your first art on the walls of your home, you may want to stick with some of these rules, or not.

The trick with art is that it is subjective. A five dollar thrift store painting can have just as much impact on your space as a priceless work of art. If you enjoy looking at it and it moves you, why not buy it and hang it on the wall. If you out grow it or change your mind you can always take it down and put up something new. You do not have to wait until you can afford a painting or photograph that costs thousands of dollars, art can be found anywhere and introducing it into your space will lend a unique quality to your rooms that is personal to you.

When you are hanging art on the wall, you want to make sure it is at a height that optimizes viewing. Under normal circumstances, the focal point of the art should hang at eye level. This can be a confusing tip for people who share a space with others because not everyone is the same height. A good rule of thumb is to position your art around 5 feet 7 inches. This will be a little high for some people and low for others, but it is an average general height. There are exceptions of course. If you have very high ceilings and feel like the space over your doors goes on forever, adding art work to those areas can help the room feel more inviting. Also, some people choose to create art walls where they cover most of the wall space with different size art and create what is known as a gallery wall.

Gallery walls are very popular, especially among those who prefer a more eclectic or vintage look in their homes. When you are building a gallery wall, you do not have to go out and buy a bunch of art all at once. These walls can evolve over time and collect new and interesting pieces. As you are hanging new art on your gallery wall, try to hang up pieces that balance what is there so your wall always looks great. Also, start from the center of your wall, or center your first works over a piece of furniture can maintain the balance while you search for new art.

Any artwork can look professional. When you visit a gallery and see the works of great artists, the works have been professionally framed. Choosing a beautiful frame and mat can make even a child's finger painting into a stunning focal point for any room.
