Dogs are full of energy and can cause all kinds of mischief if they are left at home unattended. Equally, the home is full of hazards for curious puppies, so they need to have a comfortable place where they can play and keep out of danger.

Comfort and safety are the two most important considerations when buying a new dog cage, and the key to comfort lies in choosing the right size. No dog should ever be left in a cage that's too small and cramped, so always check that there's enough room for him to stand up and turn around comfortably without his head touching the top.

As a general rule, the cage should always be at least 25 centimetres longer than the dog's length. Get the biggest cage that your home can accommodate, as your dog will feel stressed and unhappy if he has to live in cramped conditions. To avoid wasting money on a new cage as your dog grows bigger, always go for a cage based on his adult size. To estimate this size, look at your dogs parents, search for photos or ask your vet.

Next, you need to make sure that the wire on your dog's potential new cage is closely spaced. This is vital because if the wires are too far apart, your dog could get his paws or snout stuck and this could lead to a nasty injury.

Another thing to bear in mind is whether or not you will need to transport the cage from time to time. If you regularly travel or need to move the cage from one place to another, consider purchasing a collapsible model. If you are fairly sure that the cage will stay permanently in one place, choose a model that's as sturdy and hard-wearing as possible, as it needs to be able to stand up to heavy use.

Finally, consider where in the house your dog's cage will be kept. Dogs and puppies like to be close to their owners, so if you choose to put the cage in you kitchen or living room, make sure there is enough room to accommodate it.
