Tips For Coping With Melasma Or Skin Discoloration

Tips For Coping With Melasma Or Skin Discoloration

I often converse with people on blogs, in chat rooms, or on support forums who are very depressed and devastated about their melasma. It's can be difficult and frustrating to have skin issues, but when the skin issue is on your face and is so visible, this can compound the situation. And, when you consider the fact that skin hyperpigmentation is one of those issues that can be very difficult to treat, this can make things more frustrating. I often hear comments like "I feel so ugly." Or "I don't think I'll ever see an improvement in my melamsa and I don't think I can accept that. It just feels so hopeless."

I understand these feelings. Sometimes, you feel as though there is no concealer, make up or treatment that is going to make any dent in how you feel. In the following article, I hope to offer support and insights on how to cope with melasma.

Surround Yourself With Support: It's not uncommon for me to hear people say their doctor or dermatologist seems very non sympathetic or doesn't offer them much hope. I know this is frustrating, but I also know that there are some wonderful professionals out there. Sometimes, it's just a matter of finding them. If one person doesn't give you what you need, it's usually a good idea to seek it from someone else rather than just giving up or becoming discouraged. This is true for both medical professionals and the friends that you surround yourself with. It's important that what you are exposed to is positive.

Know That The Right Make Up Really Can Make All The Difference When Covering Melasma: Sometimes, people don't believe that they can adequately cover their dark patches or spots, so they don't even try. Or sometimes, they aren't sure if they should opt with a darker color to blend with the dark spots or a lighter color to blend with the rest of their face and so they just go with one basic color. So, they end up doing nothing because they worry that the cover will look artificial and will draw more attention to the flaws.

The thing is, the right make up can truly change your appearance dramatically. I've seen people with melasma so perfectly covered that I would have never guessed this was an issue for them. I had to experiment for quite some time until I found something that truly worked to cover my melasma. I actually use three different products that are layered on my face. This is not a fast process. I have to give each step enough drying time so that it all blends together and looks completely natural. But when I'm done, I feel pretty decent with the results.

Explore Different Types Of Treatments Until You Find What Works For You: You may or may not know that they are many different treatment options for melasma. Some doctors don't believe or share this. Some chose to focus on treating their skin externally and some people tend to explore internal options. And, some people do both. Your treatment decisions will often depend on what you think triggered your melasma. Some people think that this is a yeast, copper, or fungal condition. Some see it as a hormonal imbalance. And some see it as a dermatological condition.

It sometimes takes experimenting to see what gives you the best results. And sometimes getting these answers takes time. I understand this can be frustrating, but when you give up, you're pretty much ensured that you might be disappointed. It helps to take a methodical approach and to tell yourself that as long as you keep going, you're still in the game.

Realize That No one Is Perfect. Don't Lose Hope And Don't Isolate Yourself: If you really think about it, no one has a perfect appearance. I'd be willing to bet that if you asked most people about their appearance, they could pinpoint something that bothers them. No one is 100% happy with how they look.

Perhaps your skin isn't where you want it, but you could probably play up your best attributes. You can cover your flaws and play up your eyes, hair, smile or whatever is your best feature. The most important thing is to not let this make you feel badly about yourself so that this keeps you from doing the things that would otherwise make you happy.

Honestly, I'll bet that you are more critical or your appearance because of the pigmentation than others are. Often, you are thinking about far more than others. Sometimes, it helps to place your focus on other things for a while. I have come to the conclusion that if I do the best I can, continue to look for improvements, and try to focus on things I otherwise enjoy, this keeps me from dwelling on my skin so much that I can concentrate on little else. And, for whatever reason, when I back off a little bit, I usually see some positive improvements in my melasma. I'm not sure if this is related to stress or not, but this has been the case for me.

From personal experience, I know a bit about coping with melasma. I've tried a variety of melasma treatments and coverage products and have very strong opinions about which ones work and which ones don't. I do feel that some little known and all natural treatments and covers for hyper pigmentation are very effective. You can read abouta personal melasma story at http://livingwithmelasma.com/
