Tips For Designing Great Logos For Large Format Banners

Let's face it even the most eye-catching large format banners and trade show banners are nothing without a good logo

. Bright colors, bold imagery and catchy text can all draw customers to your trade show banners, but a logo is what makes a customer really remember your brand.

A logo is, essentially, a graphic representation of your company's personality. You want it to reflect your company's values and essence, and it should be simple enough to pack a punch. If you're a small business starting out, you should aim for the stars when it comes to design so your logo can last you the life of your business. Look to successful logos like Nike's swoosh, McDonald's golden arches, KFC's colonel, Apple's apple, and Ralph Lauren's polo player for inspiration. Here are some tips for logo design.

1. Style it Right You want your logo to capture your company's philosophy, style and essence. This is common sense stuff; use your natural instinct to guide you. For example, if you're an accounting or mortgage loan company, you're probably going to want to have a logo that's professional and formal in style. If you're a children's clothing store, a logo that's fun and whimsical would be appropriate.

2. Keep it Simple Simplicity is all-important when it comes to logos; never try to capture every aspect of your business. If you're a bakery, a simple bread stick or bread basket might suffice, rather than a mishmash breads, pastries, pies and sandwiches, which will only look messy on large format banners. Keep your colors, shapes and patterns simple so they're easy on the eye and easy to reproduce on trade show banners and printed brochures.

3. Don't Get Complex We're probably repeating ourselves here, but we can't emphasize the importance of simplicity enough. Avoid trying to include subtle, complex hidden meanings in your logos; memorable logos are those that are welcoming and easy to connect with. Remember, some logos, like Adidas's three stripes, don't mean anything. What we're trying to say is, don't get too clever.

4. Keep it Broad Keep your logo as general as possible so that it's never limiting; you want a logo that will stay relevant should your company expand its range of products and services in years to come. So, rather than representing a product or service in your logo, go for something more suggestive. Remember, Nike's logo is not a running shoe or basketball, but rather a swoosh suggesting movement and determination.

5. Repeat it Once you have a logo, be sure to include it on all your marketing materials, from large format banners, trade show banners and direct mail flyers to advertisements, websites, customer uniforms and product packaging. Repetition is critical to getting your logo noticed and recognized.

As a final point, make sure you choose a quality graphic designer and brief them well on your business's services, products, goals and target audience. A good graphic designer will spend time with you to understand your business and the purpose and intent of the logo and present you with a range of viable logo options that will look striking on large format banners and other materials.
