Tips For Finding Difficult Vw Parts
If you are frustrated with your search for different VW parts
, you can find even the most difficult to find parts on the Internet if you look long enough. You dont have to look through the phone book anymore or put your name on any long waiting lists in order to find what you need. All it takes these days is a computer and a couple of clicks of the mouse. Even with the Internet, there are still some VW parts that are still a bit more challenging to find than others. Its just the nature of the beast. Here is one of the more challenging Volkswagen auto parts for auto restoration and repair: The door latch.
Many restorers find that of all of the thousands of parts they need for their Beetle, Thing, Karmann Ghia or Bus, the ones they get stuck on the most are the door latches. Specifically, many people are frustrated over their trouble finding the single cab and the double cab latches. Both of these types of cabs themselves are very rare, so taking latches from another existing car is like looking for the proverbial needle in a hay stack. There are a lot of people who often try to interchange latches or use similar ones in place of the true latches, but there are two problems with this: not only is that not the way that is true to form, these front and back latches are different from all of the other types.
Volkswagen designed the single and double cab latches to be different from each other, and not only that, but the front latches are different from the rear issues. The screws of the rear latches are sunk into the gate of the door where that latch is. A bolt going from the inside to the outside of the forward doors is what attaches the handle securely in place.
Instead of sitting and waiting for years for the right parts to come up or searching tirelessly on the Internet for these and other tricky parts you need, at least for the handles you can try this simple trick. You can not just put the front latches on the right onto the right back door, and you can not put the left front latches on the left back door. Instead, try putting the right front latch on the left back door and the left front latch on the right front door. It will not look absolutely perfect, and although you as a restoration expert will be able to notice, the average onlooker will not be able to tell a thing.
There is one remaining problem with crossing the handles, and that is that the sides stick out a bit, causing a potential to snag clothing and scratch skin, so here is a solution for that: All you have to do is to take the leaver part of the handle off of the mount shaft and swap them around so they bend at the back, like they should. Presto you have suitable door handles for your beloved Volkswagen.
