Tips For Finding The Right Type Of Single Bed

Our homes aren't as big as they used to be, so single beds are growing in popularity

. Not just for children, single beds have many uses, as guest beds, as twin beds in a marital bedroom, or as the main bed in a small or studio apartment. But what are the options available? Shops have a limited selection, to find a wider range it might be better to look online.

Generally, of course, single beds are used as children's beds, and for smaller children are bought in the smaller single size, 80cm x 190cm. For older children, & teenagers, beds are 90cm x 190cm. Ikea beds are the European single of 90cm x 200cm. Usually nice and colourful, and not too expensive to buy, children's beds are perfect...for children. Adults & teenagers will want something different however, spaceship or Barbie beds are not a good look over the age of 12!

Single beds are often found in the divan bed style, but new types are becoming more freely available, especially on the internet. Bedsteads in wood or metal with a slatted base can be an inexpensive, widely available option & have the advantage of having room underneath to put boxes etc, unlike divan beds. Pine & white painted are popular for wooden single beds & are usually fairly traditional & conservative design. Nice & inoffensive they fit with most decor.

Metal bedsteads can be Victorian, French or modern in style, but as far as modern beds go these besteads are normally at the lower end of the market, great for a teenage boy who likes an industrial look, but not so good for a design conscious adult, who might want something more sophisticated.

A fairly new type of bed in the UK market is the storage bed, a bed with room for storage in the base. If you haven't got enough room for a double bed in your bedroom then being able to easily lift up the mattress & store a large amount of things in the base has got to be a huge plus, especially as this storage space is dust free so can be used for bed linen & clothing. Some of these beds look like divan beds, but designer storage beds do exist, so you can get the best of both worlds - something practical that still looks good.

For taller adults why not buy a European size single bed? These are 90cm wide, but they are 200cm long which is a full 10cm longer than the UK single bed. Mattresses are easy to buy & that extra 10cm length should be enough for even the tallest sleeper.

Rarely found in mainstream shops, single beds from Italy are starting to really take off. More expensive than most of the usual single beds for sale, they have all of the design advantages of their bigger cousins, including a fantastic choices of styles, colours & fabrics with excellent build quality. For those who want something a little better these can be an excellent choice.

Some of these single beds have some really interesting options too, for example a spare bed tucked away in the base. Completely hidden, simply lift up the side, & pull the second bed out. Smaller than the main bed, these guest beds are still proper beds, with a spring mattress & comfortable base, & a mechanism to pull them up to the height of the main bed.

Single beds from Italy also often have options to have padded fabric or metal sides & a back, so the bed looks like a sofa if made up with the right type of bedspread, but of course as they have a mattress are actually beds. This means they can be put in a living room or study & blend in with the other furniture, rather than turning the room that they are in into a 'bedroom.'

So have a look on the internet, as well as in the shops, as all of these choices will allow you to find a single bed that is perfect for the person using it, whether that person is a child, teenager, older person, occasional guest or the proud owner of a tiny flat in a fabulous location!
