Tips For Finding Your Family Photographer

Finding a family photographer you feel comfortable with can be a journey

, especially when you consider the fact that everyone really only considers it, at the most, just once a year. If it's that time of year for you, then here are a few tips to help you on your journey to find the perfect family photographer.

First, consider the cost. Although there are some exceptions, usually you truly do get what you pay for. If money is the top priority for you, and you simply want a picture to mark your family's growth and physical changes, then look at Walmart, where you can get a package with one pose for very cheap, especially around holidays. Target also offers package deals and gives the option of purchasing individual sheets, which vary in price by size. This is ideal if you want just one large family portrait, rather than multiple photographs to disperse among relatives. If, however, you are able to spend a bit more and want quality, your options open up a lot.

Secondly, consider what type of portrait you want. Maybe you're picturing everyone dressed in coordinating outfits casually posed within the confines of a studio. Look up photography studios online and start calling. Some studios specialize in family portraits. If you're a stickler for details, you may want to drive to a studio before you make a decision and see the layout and backdrops available. If you'd like a family picture taken outdoors, or would like a photographer who will follow you around and capture a more natural image, try looking at individual photographers, rather than a studio.

Another option is to use a friend or family with a gift for photography rather than a professional. A friend or relative most likely won't be averse to catering to your whims and will save you money. But again, there is the risk of ending up with amateurish photos when you don't use a professional.

Thirdly, consider the time frame you have in mind for getting the actual photo or photos. This includes when an appointment to have your picture taken is available and when your portrait will be ready for pickup. Waiting time varies from studio to studio. If you're in a hurry to have your portrait in hand, be sure to ask about the wait time when you're questioning potential photographers.

Above all, remember: Your family portrait is worth the trouble.
