Tips For Improving Code In The Web Development Process
Have you ever found yourself going back to the CSS on a project and wondering how on earth it managed to get into such a mess
? Unfortunately, this is a reality for many in the web development industry but it doesnt have to be that way. By writing code that is slimmer and faster, you are less likely to give yourself (or another developer) a headache down the track, and you can use these tips to achieve it:
Stay organized
As with any industry, it really pays to stay as organized as possible in web development. Instead of just dropping ids and classes wherever you feel like, use a coherent structure (for example, declare your most generic items first, then to not-so-generic items, and so on and so forth).
Title, date and sign
This refers to letting others know who wrote the CSS, when it was written and who they should be contacting if they have any questions. It is also handy to include a list of common colours used throughout the web development process, as this makes it easier to make changes later on.
Template library
To make the web development process even easier in the future, you can strip out anything that isnt generic from a structure that you have settled on using and save the file as a CSS template. Next time you want to use a similar template, simply open the file and voila!
Avoid repeating
You should try and reuse attributes wherever you can in the web development process, as this will prevent you from missing mistakes and make changes easier. You can achieve this by grouping elements (if your h1 and h2 elements both use the same font size, colour and margins, for example, you can group them with a comma).
Validate
This is something that you should be doing as a part of the web development process anyway validating your code will help you locate where any errors have occurred (allowing you to fix them up before the website goes live).
Write cleanly
You should separate any browser-specific CSS so that it is in its own individual style sheet. This will avoid the appearance of any CSS hacks in your style sheets (which are considered dirty coding), as well as keeping the whole thing manageable.
By employing the above tips as a part of your daily practice, you are sure to improve your coding and make the web development process run much quicker and smoother. Remember that slipping in even one of the areas outlined above could result in headache code that takes days to sift through in order to find an error or a piece of CSS that needs to be changed.
