Tips For Improving Supply Chain Management

Using new software and automation can help streamline the process

. Here are a few tips for improving the time management and cost effectiveness in the business of supply and demand.

Packing Instructions

Use automated software so that instructions for packing can be given out later in the process. This allows time for changes in orders to reduce the number inaccurate shipments caused by changing orders after they have already left the building. Shipping instructions can be delayed as well, just in case there are any adjustments to which address will receive merchandise.

Visibility

When possible, keep items that have already been packed and prepared for shipping available close-by to avoid running out of stock, especially on popular merchandise. When a rush order comes in, it will be available and ready to go. This reduces the loss of sale on the retail side when a customer cannot purchase what they want when they want it.

Cross-docking

Cycle times can be cut by eliminating the warehouse step in the supply chain. Ship merchandise to a common dock area. It will arrive at one location where it is then separated into appropriate shipments and sent to different retail destinations. This skips the step of first moving it to the warehouse. The stacking, storage, repacking and distributing of the order is accomplished in the same port, just across the dock.

Efficiency

Revamp labeling for UCC-128/EAN cartons to make them compliant. This reduces lag time when non-compliant shipments are sent and held up or returned.

Automation

Computerize forms that are still being filled out by hand and mailed separately. Automate the documentation to make things faster and easier to read. Use portals or interfaces instead. This reduces errors in reading handwriting and improves the amount of time it takes to send a document from one point to the next. Electronic invoicing streamlines the process as well.

Accuracy

Reduce the number of errors in documents. Make them easier to read and understand. Are they clear? Is there a language barrier? Is the print size large enough? Consider areas that may be constant sticking points that cause mistakes in the ordering and shipment processes because they are frequently filled out incorrectly. Change the form to make it more user-friendly.
