Tips For Internet Identity Theft Protection Ignore At Your Peril Part 1 Of 2

Internet Identity Theft can ruin your life! Keep these tips in mind when purchasing stuff:

1 Only buy goods from a company that you know and have had dealings with before, or at least have friends who can vouch for them.

The reason I say this is because of an incident I had myself. I bought some goods on-line and gave them my credit card details. The goods were delivered, but a week or so later I got a call from my card company to say someone had tried to buy goods from overseas with my details. Fortunately for me it was flagged up for two reasons. The first was, it exceeded my card limit, and the second was it was outside my normal spending pattern.

I asked the bank what would have happened if the transaction was successful. They told me I had internet identity theft protection as part of their service to me. All I had to do was notify them of anything that was on my statement and they would investigate it thoroughly.

2 Never buy something that sounds too good to miss and follow your gut instincts.

I know this might sound such an obvious thing to say but we all want a bargain, and sometimes we fall for a con. This is dangerous online because we will be asked for our card details i.e. the long number on the front and usually the last three security numbers from the back. Next we will have to give the address for delivery, which we will be asked to confirm if it is the same as the billing address. So already they have some very useful identity information about us.

So we may think we have a bargain, but at what price?

3 Check the security of the site you are buying from.

How do you do this you might ask? Well, when you go through to the sales or order page check the URL (Universal Resource Locator) for the site. What you are looking for is https://and the domain name and NOT JUST http://. Notice the s after http? This indicates that the site is secure and that your details are encrypted before being sent so nobody can intercept your details. If you do not see HTTPS:// when you are about to enter account or credit card information, DO NOT DO IT!

4 Always use a credit card where possible.

It is not always possible to use a credit card, especially if you have a low credit limit or insufficient balance left for a particular transaction before the end of the month. The reason you are better to use a credit card is that you usually have Internet Identity Theft Protection with the card company. This at least gives you someone to help if you are unfortunate enough to fall victim to I.D. theft online, and offline for that matter. Additionally, a credit card provides a buffer between you and your cash, whereas a debit or ATM card does not.

5 Make sure your computer security software is up to date.

Never assume anything with internet security. To assume can make an ass of u and me Never rely on the cheapest solution and check that it is always working and up to date. Make sure that you have a spyware protection element included too. Spyware is often ignored because a lot of people do not really understand what it is or how it can affect your online security. If you visit our website you can learn more about this aspect of protection.

Do not take any risks when it comes to protecting your personal information and make sure you learn about malware and spyware. If you are not taking the correct precautions, you may find that you have no Internet Identity Theft Protection coverage.

Part 2 of this article will continue with more tips. Stay tuned.
