Tips For Keeping Your Dog Warm During Those Winter Outdoor Activities

If you love taking your dogs for walks, but the cold of winter can sometimes put

a damper on that outdoor activity which can be somewhat depressing if you really enjoy it and so does your dog. If you really want to get your dog out for those walks, here are some things you can keep in mind when taking your dog outdoors to brave the cold of winter.

One of the most important things to remember about taking your dog outside in the cold of winter is that if your dog is an inside dog, and theyre not used to the cold weather just like you are not used to the cold weather, then you need to take the necessary precautions to make sure they stay warm outside. If youre taking your dogs outside for the soul purpose of going for a walk and thats it, then you dont have as much to worry about since you will be constantly moving. Remember, just because a dog may have a thicker coat than you, doesnt necessarily mean that they wont get cold. A dog is just as likely to get hyperthermia as you would be if you were left outside for a long period of time with minimal protection against the cold. So one way for combating the cold is to constantly keep your dog active and moving around while outside.

Your dogs feet can be very sensitive to the cold if they are not used to it so its important that you keep an eye on how they are reacting to the cold. If you see that after a few minutes of being outside, they are starting to lift their feet off the ground as if to try and keep them away from the snow and ice, then this means that the cold has become painful to their feet and you should get them inside so they can warm them up. One strategy that you might try is to put dog booties on your dogs feet. I know this may sound ridiculous to some, but they really do help keep your dogs feet warm, especially if your dog has smaller feet. If your dog can stand having them on, then it they are a great tool for keeping your dog warm while on those winter walks.

Finally, if you really want to get your dog out for his walk, perhaps you might consider shortening up the length of that walk or even splitting it up into two shorter walks instead of one long walk. This will give your dog a better chance of staying warm while still being able to go on his walk for the day. It is often a good idea to take your dog for multiple walks during the day so this would be the perfect opportunity to do so.

The cold winter does not have to place a burden on your dogs outdoor activity time, you simply have to learn how to deal with it in order to keep your dog safe and happy during those chilling times. If you keep these few tips in mind, youll be well on your way to keeping your dog safe during the cold winter.
