Tips For Making It Through Allergy Season

For many people, the start of spring brings both warmer temperatures and runny noses

. As plants begin to bloom and allergens fill the air, people who have allergies start to exhibit the symptoms of the season. To avoid allergic reactions and be able to enjoy the spring season, there are a few things you can do. It is important to be knowledgeable about what allergies you have and be proactive about treating them. If you think your child may be suffering from allergies, do not hesitate to make an appointment with your North Potomac pediatrician.

How Do You Know What You Are Allergic To?

The first step in combatting allergies is knowing exactly what you are up against. If you or your child experiences allergic symptoms but don't know exactly what is causing them, you should have an allergy test performed by your doctor. The most common and inexpensive method for testing allergies is by having an allergy skin test performed. In this procedure, your doctor will lightly prick your skin and inject a very small amount of an allergen into the top layer of your skin. After waiting about 15 to 20 minutes, your doctor will then check your skin for any signs of an allergic reaction. If certain allergens caused a reaction in your skin, you will then be aware of what specifically causes your allergic reactions. Armed with this information, you will be able to better protect yourself against symptoms of your allergies.

Over The Counter Medicine To Fight Allergies

Any drug store that you visit will have over the counter medicines that will help you with the symptoms of your allergies. If you are experiencing symptoms every day, it can be helpful to take a non-drowsy antihistamine every morning, such as Claritin. If your nose continues to be congested, use an over the counter saline nasal rinse or a decongestant pill to help ease your congestion. If your eyes are irritated, purchase some antihistamine eye drops to relieve redness and itchiness.

Avoiding Your Triggers

The most common sense solution for avoiding allergic reactions is to avoid the things that you are allergic to. This is not always possible if you are allergic to things that are floating around in the air, but there are still steps you can take to avoid airborne allergens. When you are at home, make sure to keep all of your windows closed to keep allergens out. If you have been outside doing yard work, make sure to take a shower right after you come inside to avoid bringing materials you are allergic to into your house.
