Tips For Packing The Car For A Trip Away

With airline fares going up and luggage allowances going down

, lots of families are choosing to head off on a driving holiday this year. However, packing the car with everyone's belongings can be a bit of a nightmare, especially if your suitcases are competing with camping gear, bikes or fishing equipment for space.

Take a look at our top packing tips to help you fit all the essentials into your vehicle before heading off on your trip:

- Make a list before you go. Get the family together a few days before your holiday and draw up a list of the stuff you want to take together. This can be great for getting the kids excited about the trip, and can act as a handy checklist to make sure you've got everything before hitting the road.

- Clear your car boot of any unnecessary items before loading your gear in. Make sure any spare wheels, jacks or tools are fitted neatly into their compartments to maximise the space inside.

- Make sure you pack heavier items into the car first, so that they're at the bottom of the boot and won't squash or damage any lighter goods that may be below.

- If you're going camping, pack your tent last. This means it will be at the top of the pile in the boot and will be the first thing you can lay your hands on when you arrive. If you arrive in the pouring rain, you'll definitely appreciate the time saved digging around in the boot for your only form of shelter!

- Consider investing in a set of roof bars and a roof box. This will free up valuable room in your boot, and create loads of extra luggage space. You can also attach things like cycle carriers and surfboards to your roof bars if you fancy an active holiday. If you're not sure which bars will fit your car or how to install them, your local car parts retailer should be able to offer advice and even fit them for you.

- Remember, you may wish to bring some souvenirs back to remind you of your trip, or you may want to bring back presents for your loved ones who didn't get to go on the holiday. Therefore it's a good idea to leave some space to bring stuff back, otherwise you may have to leave something behind!
