Tips For Painting A Home

Painting the outside and inside of your home can make a dramatic difference in the look and feel of the house

. Painting your home easily adds a new theme or feel and can be the perfect way to get the change you are looking for.

Painting is a job that takes a lot of time. Picking out the paint, getting the supplies, and then actually painting can be a long and hard process. If you are able to follow these tips you will be able to get the most out of your painting experience.

First, decide if you want to hire professional help. Painting is a job that requires a lot of time, a moderate level of skill, and a few basic tools.

By painting yourself, you can usually save money but is it worth the cost? Each situation varies depending on a number of factors. These include your experience, size of job, fitness, available time, and the difficulty of working on your home's exterior walls.

Second, invest in quality paint. When you take the time to paint you want it to last as long as possible.

Choosing high-quality paint will be worth the extra money. Not only will it last longer, but it will be easier to work with. Higher quality paint tends to be easier to maintain and covers the walls better and more easily in the process.

Spending a little bit more money on the paint should not be a question when you think about the effort and expense of painting your house. Most likely you don't want to have to do the job again in four or five years and with high quality paint you won't have to.

Third, consider when you want to paint. As the sun moves throughout the day you will be able to see the paint in different ways.

The best time of the day to paint is during the afternoon when there is full sun. Natural light will help you to see the best and will also show a different color than light bulbs will.

Also, especially if outdoors, take into consideration the weather on the day of painting. You don't want to paint in harsh wind, rain, or other weather conditions.

Fourth, take the time to prepare the surfaces you plan to paint. This is one of the hardest steps, but also, one of the most important. This is because even high-quality paint won't guarantee a lasting paint job if you don't prepare the surfaces properly.

If there is any peeling, blistering, wrinkling, flaking, or holes where the wall needs to be patched up then it needs to be done before you paint over it. Paint can be removed from walls by scraping and sanding, ideally you have the use of a power sander.

During this step it is advised that you wear a dust mask, gloves, and protective goggles. This is because there will be dust and paint chips lurking in the air.

Fifth, only paint what you intend to paint. Avoid painting roofs, molding, flooring, and other surfaces by masking them up or covering them.

You can mask areas with plastic sheeting and 3-inch masking tape. Use drop cloths to protect other surfaces from dripping paint.

Sixth, be aware of the best patterns for painting. The most appealing way to paint surfaces is from the top down. It just looks better when you follow these patterns.

Begin with the gutters, fascia, and eaves or the top of the wall and work your way down the main surfaces, painting in 3 to 4-foot-square sections. Also, using a high-quality brush will make a big difference in the look of the dried paint.

Be sure to regularly check for any paint drips and streaks. It just takes a second to fix these problems when the paint is wet, but they are much more difficult to clean up after the paint dries.

Seventh, take the time to clean up the painting area properly. Use soap and water for latex paints or paint thinner for alkyd paints to thoroughly clean your brushes and gear right after painting. If you do this properly you will be able to use them again.

When cleaning up make sure that you properly dispose of extra paint and chemicals. Paint thinner and excess paint are not meant to be poured down the drain or onto the ground, as this is a serious source of ground water pollution. To properly dispose of these, keep them in an old sealed paint can and dispose of it at a toxic waste collection site.

After all the hard work is done you will be glad with the difference it makes in the look of your home. If you take the time to do a good paint job and you will be excited about the results.
