Tips For Potty Training A Girl

Many people believe that its easier to potty train a boy

, but this is probably just an urban myth. Boys and girls can learn what the toilet is for, usually without a lot of time and trouble. The belief that boys are easier to train than girls is likely based on the fact that Mom is usually the one who does the training for the kids. Mom may not fully agree with this belief system, but whoever ends up training the kids to use the toilet might need some advice. Here are some tips for potty training a girl.

The first step is to help her make the association between her urge to relieve herself and the toilet itself. Creating a picture in her mind of just what that porcelain gadget is for will help her to control herself until she can make it to the bathroom. There are different ways to do this, and it will mainly depend on how she chooses to make the association. She may learn by watching Mom use the toilet, or she may rely more on actually using it herself to begin to feel more comfortable with the process.

Mom can first try and taking the girl with her when she uses the toilet. The little one will understand instinctively whats happening, and talking about whats going on is helpful. The discussion should be matter-of-fact, but it shouldnt be too serious. This may give her the impression that the process is stressful, and this will just add unnecessary tension to the situation. She needs to learn that this is a natural thing to do. When Mom is done, she should explain how to wipe properly - front to back - as she does it. A deep discussion about medical realities isnt necessary here, just an explanation. The child will learn by repetition, so this is just one step to teach her.

Now its the girls turn. Sit her on the toilet and encourage her to do just what Mom did, the same way. This may be the chance to include number 2 in the discussion. Again, this is all news to the child, so the more relative information they receive, the better, and talking about will remove the mystery and make it into just another everyday thing to do. Even if she doesnt go this time, she should still wipe as if she had. This will ingrain the idea into her habitual response.

The first time this training session takes place should really be at home, in a familiar environment. She will be more relaxed, and this will also help her in associating the room with the toilet and her proximity to it. It is also a good idea to make this a shared routine, straight out of bed in the morning. Again, this is all about association. Kids will often do their business at night in bed, and even during bath time. Have her sit on the toilet before a bath, and before bedtime.

This process also includes moving from diapers to big girl underwear. It may be helpful to look for underwear that are cool and edgy, such as ones that have a rock and roll theme or some cute saying on them. This will make the process more fun and interesting.
