Tips For Safe Winter Motorcycle Riding
Taking a motorcycle out onto a road in winter can be a hazardous time for even the most experienced of riders
. Thick snow, black ice and freezing temperatures can make handling a motorcycle at this time of a year a very difficult experience.
Generally speaking, riding in wintry conditions is something that should be avoided, if possible. Whether it means using a car, public transport or simply not taking the journey at all, it is considered to be the safest option to refrain from using a motorcycle in the winter.
If you have no other option but to use your motorcycle, or simply want to experience riding in these conditions, there are several points that you should take note of.
Firstly, it is imperative that you are a much more cautious rider than normal when the conditions of the road are poor, as they so often are in winter. A general and broad term, riding more cautiously encompasses a range of different aspects, but simply means to slow down and be more attentive to your surroundings, so you are prepared for an incident, should it happen.
Braking is something that many people fail to carry out correctly in the snow and ice, believing that they can brake as usual. Although this may actually be possible, it will usually result in you sliding off the road, as your wheels lock up, failing to find any type of grip on the icy surface of the road.
To prevent this from happening, braking should be done slowly but firmly, allowing for more time than usual to brake. Furthermore, should you find yourself skidding or sliding, you should refrain from instinctively pressing the brake and instead repeatedly press it in quick succession. Whilst this is not a natural process, it is much safer as it slows the motorcycle down safely, allowing the wheels to find a sufficient amount of grip on the road.
If you are planning on riding your motorcycle in the winter, it is worthwhile checking the level of motorcycle insurance that you currently have in place and looking at the possibility of upgrading to a more substantial level, if necessary. The reason behind this is that if you have a Third Party of Third Party, Fire and Theft motorcycle insurance policy, you are not covered for any incidents such as damage to your motorcycle should you slip on ice and therefore for the additional cost (which if only temporary, can be minimal), it can be extremely worthwhile having this extra cover in place.
Using any vehicle on a road when it is snowing or there is ice apparent is never recommended. Difficult to control, with unpredictable instances often apparent, taking a motorcycle onto a road in the winter is extremely dangerous. However, should it need to be done, then you must ensure that you have an appropriate and suitable amount of motorcycle insurance in place and you ride as safely and cautiously as possible, to minimize the chance of being involved in any type of incident.
