Tips For Selecting A Court Reporting School

Court reporting is a rewarding career that involves accurately recording and transcribing

information being exchanged in a court room while in progress.

Many successful individuals entering this field complete one of the many court reporting programs available through community colleges, private colleges and specialized training facilities. They are widely advertised and perhaps because of this reason, you should be a little cautious.

When it comes to selecting a training school there a few guidelines you should follow.

Is the court reporting program recognized?

What about the teaching staff, are they trained professionals?

What is the reputation of the course and job intake after graduation?

As already mentioned, community colleges or private schools offer these and the timeline for completion is between 10 months to two years. Many of those that graduate can choose to become a court reporter, court transcriber or legal secretary.

If you already possess strong communication skills, have a passion for Law (you need to be familiar with most legal jargon) and above average typing skills - then attending a court room reporting school program is ideal for you. The rest of the skills - technological aspect and legal system practices - can be learned from the school's program.

During court hearings, court trials or private meetings, a court room reporter is responsible for recording all communication and then transcribing it into readable text format. Trainees will be exposed to mock trials and get familiar with the stenograph typewriter.

Before you select a school ensure that it is recognized by the NCRA. Government bodies are the main employers for court room reporters and they seek to employ graduates from an accredited school. Otherwise you will find a hard to find suitable employment.

The teaching staff have to be experienced court reporters. Only then can you truly learn effectively. Don't be shy in asking about the academic credentials of your tutor/mentor in class.

Finally your choice of school's reputation should be of a high standard. Not only will this impress employers but employers know you've attended a court reporting school with a solid education foundation, accredited programs and excellent staff. All this information can be obtained through the school's counsellor or their website. Find out if they have any agreements with potential employers for placement purposes. Some of the community colleges would, private colleges may not.

It pays to do your due diligence if you are serious about becoming a court room reporter. When you have addressed all the above mentioned points and are satisfied, then you'll know you've made the right choice in your school reporting selection.
