Tips For Selecting Good Comp Vests
With warmer weather ahead, it's time for avid water skiers
, wake boarders, and other water sports enthusiasts to plan out their next water sports trip. That means it's also time to get your gear in order. Although there are dozens of pieces of gear to focus on, there's nothing that people notice more than your comp vest. It becomes you, your trademark, just like a NFL player's jersey is identified with that particular player. Keeping your comp vest up to date and stylish says a lot about how much you enjoy the sport.
Your comp vest also helps keep you safe while you're out on the water. Comp vests help support the lumbar region (they give back support just where you'll need it), plus they also give you that floatation bonus of a life vest that really comes in handy if you wipe out at high speeds, and plunge way deep into the water. Comp vests also protect your chest area from sunburn and skin cancer, a very real concern for those of us who spend a lot of the summertime in the sunshine, out on the water where the sun's reflection off the water intensifies sun damage and increases the risk of skin cancer.
The best comp vests for water sports are always going to be flexible enough that they move with you as much as possible. There's nothing like being stuffed into a stiff straightjacket vest to ruin the fluidity of an otherwise awesome sport. Many lighter weight comp vests are available that minimize bulk. Some of the higher priced models are segmented, which means the foam pieces are smaller and sewn into pockets along the vest, rather than being 3 big pieces of stiff, bulky foam. A segmented comp vest allows for a lot more flexibility than the traditional life jacket-styled comp vests.
Most comp vests come with a pocket for your MP3 player, but make sure your MP3 player is guaranteed to be water resistant to at least 10 feet before you take it waterskiing with you. Most players aren't water resistant enough to withstand the occasional plunge into a lake, so don't think that just because your new comp vest has a pocket for your MP3 player it will necessarily still be usable after a day out on the water.
If you like a comp vest that isn't as bulky, take a look at comp vests that are made of lightweight fluid foam neoprene shells. If you're into wakeboarding, it is also usually a good investment if you get a comp vest that has quick release dual safety buckles.
