Tips For Smoke Detector Installation
Smoke Detector Installation is a must for every home
. Installing a smoke detector would inform you by raising an alarm so that you can act quickly because a smoke detector detects the signals that are created during a fire.
There maybe various fire-fighting equipment already installed in your house. Equipment like fire extinguishers and fire blankets can be used to extinguish fire after it has broken out. Such equipment gives you a confidence that you have minimized the risk of damage to your assets in case of fire.
What if you control the fire right at its start before it becomes large? That will surely save bigger losses. Any fire starts with a smoke and then the flame starts. And as per accident statistics, majority of deaths happen during night time when people are sleeping.
There are two types of Smoke Detectors:
1. Ionization Type Smoke detector: An ionization smoke alarm uses a small amount of radioactive material to ionize air in the sensing chamber. Because of this the air chamber becomes conductive permitting current to flow between two charged electrodes. When products of combustion, such as smoke, enter the chamber it decreases the conductivity of the air chamber. When this reduction in conductivity is reduced to a predetermined level, the alarm goes off. So this type of smoke detector works faster in case of blazing fire where you have smoke associated with fire like in a room that has highly combustible materials that can create flaming fires. Such materials include flammable liquids, newspapers, and paint cleaning solutions.
2. Photoelectric Type Smoke detector: A photoelectric type smoke alarm consists of a light emitting diode and a light sensitive sensor in the sensing chamber. The suspended products of combustion in the chamber scatter the light beam, which sets off an alarm when detected. There are some fires called as smoldering fire, where the item that catches fire but with low flames. Photoelectric models are best suited for residential applications like living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. This is because these rooms often contain large pieces of furniture, such as sofas, tables, bed, mattresses, etc. which will burn slowly and create more smoldering smoke than flames.
While installing a smoke detector you need to carefully decide the place of installation. You must seek expert opinion. Smoke detectors should be placed in every location so that it alerts you when needed. Idea locations include bedrooms, kitchens (away from stoves), living rooms, the top of stairways. So every floor of your home should have at least one smoke detector in it. A smoke detector should also be placed in your garage.
Smoke detectors can be battery operated and work independently, or they come with an electrical connection and have a battery backup supply.
After the smoke detector is set up, it needs proper maintenance after some time. Always check the device and make sure that it is working. Many people install the device and expect them to work forever but the devices have need regular monitoring.
Please make sure to change its battery at least once a year or at least have the battery checked. Also dust particles can make the alarm to go off so it has to be cleaned and reset to make it functional again.
Installing a smoke detector needs an expertise as small mistakes could lead to greater losses during actual fires. The expertise is in terms of the placement of the detector, setting up the connections of battery or power supply to detector, knowledge of the inflammable items present in your living or office area. Therefore, a professional smoke detector installation is recommended.
