Tips For Staying Safe On A College Campus
College life offers a whole new world
College life offers a whole new world. You are in your own community with countless other people your age. No more curfew, as you are away from home for the first time. And there are all kinds of late nights - partying or studying. While most things about college are incredibly exciting, you do need to use some common sense. For females, particularly, you need to be cautious - especially late at night.
Below are a few tips for staying safe on a college campus.
* Use the buddy system
When you go to bars or parties, use the buddy system. Go with at least one friend. And stay close together, especially when it's time to go home. You can also use the buddy system when you go out for late nights of studying. You are safer with a friend when coming home to your dorm or apartment. And you should also use the buddy system when out jogging. There is more safety in numbers. You should never run alone when it is dark outside or when you go to remote areas.
* Keep mace on your keychain
In the event you run into something dangerous, you want to be as prepared as possible. Keep a small can of mace on your keychain. Learn how to use it, so that you can react quickly if frightened.
* Lock your doors
College feels like this close-knit community - and in many ways, it is. While you want to enjoy this aspect of college, you need to be careful not to let your guard down too much. Lock your doors to your apartment or condo, no matter how tempting it may seem to leave them unlocked so friends can come and go. Unlocked doors invite danger, and it's just not worth the risk. Also, lock the doors of your car on a consistent basis. It's better to be safe than sorry, and locking your car doors is an easy preventative measure.
* Stay alert
When you park your car at night, you may have a long walk to the door of your apartment. Stay alert at all times. If you notice a stranger lurking around, do not get out of your car. If you are in a situation where you cannot use the buddy system, call a friend before walking through a dark parking lot. Let your friend know where you are, and keep this friend on the line while you walk to your door. Staying safe on a college campus is hugely important. By following some of these tactics, you will increase your likelihood of having a safe experience during the wonderful college years.
