Report card time is here! Are you teachers ready with it
? Teachers normally face tough time dealing with report card blues. Many teachers spend their entire weekend grading and preparing them and even then they feel it is not up to the expectations. However, there are easier ways to deals with it.
Before you start to pen down your remarks you need to make sure that you truly know your student well and write keeping in mind, how would you as a parent react to as to what teacher is writing? Following certain guidelines and tips can simplify report card tasks to some extend-
Be objective: As a teacher you should know the benchmarks for the grades and mark students according to those benchmarks. Remember, you need to be absolutely objective while grading.
Prepare student portfolios: It is very essential to prepare portfolio of each student. Portfolio need to include in detail area of work of the students and teacher need to have reasoning or should be able to support any grade given, either - good or bad.
The comments: Try and avoid subjective comments completely such as nice or sweet etc. Rather focus on students productive output and constructive actions - not on your viewpoint regarding the students personality. Begin writing report card by mentioning positive statement about the student.
Grade analyses: Besides academics, base youre grading on extra-curricular and participation in classroom. Also, base it on projects and presentations by the students. In addition, you can judge him on the basis of team-work.
Extra curricular grades: Academics shouldnt be the only platform for grading. Provide grades for special education, art, music etc.
Be careful: Prepare rough chart for your grades before penning it finally on report card. Be careful and avoid mess on the final report card sheet.
Dont panic: If you havent completed preparing your report card on time. Dont panic. Spread the work over the weekend but handle it subtly to avoid last minute confusions.
Plan and organize: Get yourself organized by outlining topics you plan to cover on a calendar. Plan it out neatly week by week & day by day. If it is not required, don't get into detail - just write down the topics. Also, be prepared to meet and brief parents verbally about the students performance as parents are more interested to know about childs performance on the horses mouth i.e. teachers.
