Tips For Towing A Caravan Trailer As Part Of Your Next Driving Holiday
It is not especially difficult but if you are new to the experience then it can be a little harrowing
. In most cases, drivers find the number one problem to be adjusting to the additional weight of the combination of car and trailer and finding a way to control them on the road.
So if this sounds familiar and you are going on a trip, then here are 9 tips to keep in mind to make sure you have a safer road trip and also feel more relaxed and confident when towing the trailer.
1) Firstly, you should take a look through the manual. Trailers or caravans should have a manual or even just a sticker on the side that will tell you what size car you need to safely tow your trailer. For example, you don't want to tow a caravan or trailer with small city car as it just won't safe, not to mention powerful enough.
2) Next, make sure it has a hitch package. A hitch package is a facility to attach the trailer electronics to the battery of your car. You really do need this system as it will power the rear lights on your camper or trailer, ensuring that other vehicles are aware that you are on the road.
3) Determine your viewing restrictions and limits, when the trailer is attached. This could involve buying mirror extensions to ensure that you can see the camper and also allow you to have a view of any vehicles that may be driving at the side or even behind you. On a road trip the last thing you want to do is have an accident, have to sort out insurance details and even cause serious injuries.
4) Before setting off do a safety inspection. This will ensure that everything is safe and connected correctly. A thorough check will include: checking tyre pressure, checking hitch wiring is long enough to account for turns, attaching the equalizer and stabilizer, ensuring that the caravan or trailer is level and putting the trailer tongue in the right position.
5) Before you put the key in the engine make sure your belongings are securely in place. You really should have an inspection as you don't want get to your holiday destination and find all of your plates on the floor and smashed to a million pieces.
6) Hold your speed when you go down a hill. Switch to a lower gear and then gently go down the hill, it is the only real way to drive down a hilly road.
7) You also need to take your time and be more careful when reversing. When turning a corner the slightest of adjustments on the steering wheel can damage the trailer or caravan and make the tow bar inoperable.
8) Next, you should try and not make any sharp or abrupt turns. If it is possible you should change your driving style so that steering adjustments can be made as early as possible, this will help to ensure you stay a lot safer during your trip.
9) Lastly, should you have vehicle that is too old or not suitable for towing then perhaps you should consider leasing a vehicle instead. For instance, a few months ago I took out a Fiat leasing deal that was more appropriate for my driving holiday.
If you decide to follow this advice then hopefully you will have a stress free time during your next trip, irrespective of where you plan to go.
