In order to ensure perfect health of your house and your own peace of mind, you must make sure that regular maintenance is carried out for your home plumbing system. This includes upkeep of not only the system that operates toilets, sinks, showers, and bathtubs in your house, but also the laundry facilities in your house for your washer, utility sinks, and drains that can be installed.
You can follow the guidelines below to keep your plumbing system in top condition:
1. Look for signs of leakage such as puddles and watermarks.
2. Look for for signs of corrosion such as green stains around brass and copper fittings and on shutoff valves.
3. Look for low water pressure that can indicate sediment buildup in faucets and shower heads. A fault in the main supply line is also a possibility .
4. Look for slow drainage that can indicate clogging in the drain or a blocked vent pipe. Drains should have the full swirl when draining. If bubbles appear , they may indicate blockage.
5. Look for problems with the flushing handle and inside the toilet for missing, broken or rusted parts. Make sure the toilet water does not continue to run after flushing.
6. Look for cracked tiles within the shower, around sinks, or near water pipes. Loose or hollow tiles indicate that there is, or was, a leak that has caused rotting underneath or behind the tile.
7. Look inside the burner chamber of your water heater for rust deposits. If the flame is yellow in color instead of a steady blue, cleaning of the jets is required.
8. Look at washing machine hoses to ensure that there aren't any cracks and that the hoses aren't brittle or leaking.
9. Look for mildew, which is brought on by standing water which will have dried up again.
10. Look at all of the faucets in your home for any water coming out of the handles and valves, after turning them on. Such leaks considerably add up on monthly water bills.
11. Look to check if tub, sink or toilet caulking is coming off.
12. Look to have regular checkups done by professionals. You are advised to go in for an annual maintenance program with your plumbing company or make sure to get an annual inspection for your plumbing system.
