Fitting a garage door was once a professional job. However, todays modern doors can be fitted by anyone with some basic DIY skills. Even remote controlled, electrically operated models are relatively easy to install. However, although garage doors are much lighter than they used to be, they are still large and unwieldy so you may need assistance to do the job safely and properly.

Modern garage doors are termed up-and-over. This means they fold or swing upwards via a canopy or retractable mechanism. There are also roller doors available. All three types are available in manual, electrically operated and remote electrically operated format; it is an easy job to alter an existing manual door to an electric one, provided the mechanism is compatible.

Canopy and retractable garage doors come in a variety of styles such as Georgian, Tudor, and Bronte. Some are solid, while others have attractive glass panels for extra light. They are generally made from fibreglass resin or light metal alloy, as these are durable, lightweight, strong and easy to keep clean. Metal doors are generally sold primes and ready-to-paint, while GRP doors often have a wood-grain effect, and can even be purchased stained to look like real wood. These look stunning on a property with exterior woodwork of the same type.

Canopy doors are the easiest to install, and dont intrude into the roof space, making them a popular choice where there are obstructions. However, they are restricted to openings of 8 ft or less. They open on tracks that run either side of the door, and when fully raised form a canopy above the porch.

Retractable garage doors have tracks at the top, and retract fully into the garage roof space. They are spring-assisted, offering a smoother and simpler operating action, and are more durable than canopy doors. They also have a greater lifting capacity and so are fitted to openings of 8 ft or wider.

Roller doors roll into a barrel at the top of the garage. Although not as attractive as up-and-over doors, they have the advantage of being compact: there is no outward swing, and the interior roof space is left free. This makes them ideal for smaller garages or houses where outward opening would be a problem.

Before ordering garage doors, you need to decide if the door is to be fitted behind or between the reveal, and if the existing frame is strong enough to support the new fitment.
