Tips On Collecting Christmas Bubble Lights

Christmas bubble lights were first made by Edison in 1880

. He had figured out how to make incandescent lights and was looking to market them. In 1882 a friend displayed the lights on a tree as a marketing tool as well. However, it was not until the 1930's that Glo-Lite began making the bubble lights. Glo-Lite created a batch of around 68,000 in 1942 for Christmas. These became the standard bubble light known as NOMA in 1946. NOMA was a group of 15 companies that sold Christmas lights. They formed in 1925. They became the largest producers and sellers of Christmas lights in the world.

NOMA was the largest producer of the Christmas bubble lights. However, by 1968 NOMA Electric Company no longer manufactured Christmas lights. The company is no longer around, yet the bubble lights still are. Plus there are numerous version of the bubble lights. The most common and popular are the large bulb at the bottom, that has a glass tube that protrudes from the top. The liquid inside heats up and begins to bubble within the tube, so that the lights create a flickering affect on the tree.

Christmas bubble lights are available in full size versions, as well as a smaller counterpart. The bulb at the bottom of each light on the string may be green, red or yellow. There is a top piece to the bulb at that bottom that will be an alternating color The liquid inside usually has a red appearance. The glass tube that protrudes from the top has a slight curve at tip. This is to give the appearance of a candle. Since at one time candles were placed on Christmas tress. However, this was a fire hazard and with the advent of Christmas bubble lights the need for real candles was no longer necessary.

In recent years there have been other variations of Christmas bubble lights. Though not as popular, they are available. Such as, clear or silver bubble lights. The bulb at the bottom is clear and so is the glass tube that protrudes from the top. Some of these may have glitter mixed in with the liquid that bubbles as well. There are also versions that are smaller and have a square shaped bottom to them with the clear tube come from the center. The colors are blue, green, red and yellow.

Christmas bubble lights have also been marketed for children's favorite cartoon characters. For example, a Christmas Tweety Bird, Winne the Pooh, Snoopy, Scooby-Doo or Mickey Mouse sitting on the bubble light bulb at the bottom and holding on to the clear tube. Even these come as 12 pack light strings. As do the standard Christmas bubble lights. The cord is green to blend into the tree on the different versions and the lights need to be set upwards in the tree so that the bubbles can rise. Lights that tip over end up producing no bubbles until they are are placed correctly.

Though the original manufactures of Christmas bubble lights are long gone, the interesting lights are still a holiday tradition.
