A CEO is someone who gets the work done without having to lift a finger

. They get things done through others. Wouldn't it be nice to become a CEO? Well, it would be. But what people fail to see is that they constantly ponder on the best strategy to move the company forward. The work they do is what you will call mostly cerebral. They constantly prioritize, develop growth strategies and delegate responsibilities. More importantly, these CEOs are constantly engaging people peers, colleagues, competitors, mentors, and mentees in constant in-person conversation. They are like your flyer printing constantly communicating with whoever gets their hand on it.

Problems arise when your CEO is not the person you can look up to for guidance. There are those who avoid critical or challenging messages because they are afraid that if they say something it may adversely affect the business. A good CEO, on the other hand, communicates in a 360 degree fashion. This means to say that they can communicate upwards, sidewards, and more importantly, downwards, in a way that suits that group he is speaking with.

To become a good CEO, one must be able to confidently speak in these three types of gatherings: face-to-face meetings, small focus group discussions, and large gatherings like town hall meetings. The effectiveness of each type depends largely on the message as well as the occasion. Read on and find out how to hone your skills in engaging your audience.

First, be sure you have an idea of who your audience will be. It may be one person or a large group; but the important thing is that you know who you are speaking to. I say this because there was a time when a very prominent person spoke lengthily about the virtues of teachers and how they are molding the minds of young people. It would have been a good address but the problem was that it was a gathering of accountants. Right speech; wrong crowd. This could have been easily corrected if that prominent person made sure of one thing: who she was talking to.


Second, just like print flyers, your message should be clear, concise, and more importantly, it must show that you are credible. I say like print flyers because you are working on a very limited space. When flyer printing, you must be able to get the message across within the available space. Hence, you must stick to the message and embellish this message to make it more appealing. As a speaker, you must also be able to do this. Normally, a good speaker will work within 10-12 minutes. Beyond that, the audience loses attention.

Finally, as a CEO, you must also be able to get feedback without actually hearing it. You listen to body language. This is something that you must be able to master. Just by listening to body language, you will get an idea if you are communicating well with your audience. Be it one-on-one or town hall type, be ready to get the cue from your audience's body language.
