TV and computers have come to stay and throwing them out of homes and offices are neigh impossible. One has to live with them until humanity can find an alternative to take over their functions. But for the present there are some things that we can do to protect our eyes even as we continue to watch TV and use the computers.

Here below are some tips to make watching TV and using computers healthier. Not everything is possible to be practiced. But do try; it is better than doing nothing.

a.The first important thing that you need to do is get your exams examined if you watch TV and use the computer excessively. That there isnt anything adverse doesnt mean it is going to be that way for the rest of your. So make regular visits, at least once a year, to an eye clinic and get a checkup. Doctors can forewarn if they see some trouble brewing and recommend a course of treatment. Unless you have a medical condition some changes to your lifestyle is all that will be required.

b.The amount of lighting is a very important factor when you notice that your eyes fatigue fast. Likewise fixing your eye on the monitor or TV too can have ill effects on the eyes muscle. Too much of brightness can be just as harmful as too little. What is right for you someone may not be right for you. So, do a little experimenting and set light to the right intensity. As a general rule it is not advisable to have lights over your head. Do not watch TV in total darkness like in a movie hall.


c.One of the reasons why watch TV and working before computers causes strain is the glare. Glare is often the result of external light sources reflecting directly on monitor or screen. So protect your eyes by not pointing the screen or monitor toward light sources directly. If the configuration of your office or home dont let do it, then see that you cover the windows and doors with blinds, preferably something dark if you live in tropical region or where sunlight intensity is high.

d.There are many varieties to computer monitors and TV screens. The oldest technology of all is the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) which is not much used nowadays. But if you are using one, then replace it at the earliest you can with LCD or Plasma. Besides being less bulky and occupying a smaller foot print, they also consume lesser power. What is more is that they dont radiate anything harmful to the eyes. Modern displays allow you to control the brightness, contrast and other display features to make viewing TV more pleasant. So make good use of them.

e.Instead of gluing your eyes on the screen or monitor let them stray a little once in a while. The more often you do it the better. Ideally letting your eyes stray at least once in 10 minutes will help you relax as well as give you eyes some reprieve from the straining effect. If you can once in a while throw your vision on some faraway object trough a window it will make watching TV a more pleasant experience.
