Tips On How You Can Say No Politely
One of the most difficult things to master in life is knowing how you can say no politely
. It is a thin line between rejecting something or an offer and actually offending someone. That's why we often have a hard time choosing our words whenever we try to say no. There are different situations where we might be required to offer a polite no, for example at work, on the roads, or even to someone you are having an intimate relationship with.
Understanding how to say no tactfully at work is necessary especially if you don't want to offend the colleague or to sabotage your career. The idea is always to reject an offer but don't be tactless about it. If a colleague invites you to an occasion or may wish to give you something, the best way is to be indirect with your refusal. Words like 'No. I don't like' or 'No. I don't want to' are somewhat too direct and may cause a frown. The correct phrases to use are usually 'Sorry, I don't particularly like', 'I'm afraid I'm unable to' or "That's very kind of you, but I really have to"...With words such as these, the recipient is likely to understand you and also won't take you offensively.
If you want to reject something from your boss or coworker of a higher rank than you, you will have to be a bit professional here. You can use a short note to pass your message across and be sure to sign your name at the end of the note. Just the same, the use of indirect phrases in your refusal are applicable here. Alternatively, sending an email to your boss or a highly ranked colleague, would be sufficient. Nonetheless, by all means, never walk right into their office and blurt out 'No. I cannot'
If you come across a stranger, or perhaps a mere acquaintance, you still must have an idea on how to say no politely. Never take them for granted. You could use words like "I'm sorry, but I'm unable to" or a straightforward 'No, thank you' will suffice. Be sure you are smiling whenever you do so. Facial expressions say a lot and send a bigger message across than mere the words you speak. If a friend or stranger insists, then you will have to say a stern 'No'. Sometimes, people consider your kindness for weakness.
If a partner or fianc invites you to an activity you don't have time for, words just like 'I'd love to dear, but currently I am' or 'That sounds great dear, however.' is another option on how to say no politely. The next part is the crucial one. Always offer to make it up with your loved one. They usually feel re-assured this way.
It's good to know that saying 'no thanks' doesn't automatically imply rejecting someone. We often shy away from the idea of saying it because it sounds impolite, uncaring, or you think that someone is not going to like you anymore. But, it's your right to decline. Just say it with courtesy to avoid evoking harsh feelings.
