Tips On Living Securely In An Apartment Building
If you live in a large bustling city, a small village or even a university town
, it is very possible that you reside in an apartment rather than a house.
Due to cost many people are delaying getting married, moving out of their parents home sooner and having to go to schools a lot further away from their hometowns. This has led to an entire culture of renting properties instead of owning which in turn results in eventually owning smaller spaces in larger cities. But just because you don't live in a house in the middle of the countryside doesn't mean there aren't important security tips for apartment-dwellers to follow, too.
Firstly and the most important aspect is to be kind, but to be cautious. If you are relocating to a large city from a small town, the idea of knowing your neighbours in a gigantic building might seem a little daunting, but it's entirely possible. Just err on the side of caution: unless it's your neighbour, whom you've seen and talked to and know the name of more than a couple of times, don't go holding the main door open for everyone. Home security for apartment-dwellers doesn't start at the door to the apartment--it starts at the door to the whole building.
Likewise, street smarts don't have to stop once you're standing on the steps of your building. Even if it's not a huge city with a sometimes scary crime rate, you need to be alert, especially if you're a woman. In the event that you're walking alone from your parked car to the apartment building, keep alert and those keys in your hand the whole time. This then enables you the ability to gain entry to your building as quick as possible. You also have a second option if someone tries to cause trouble and that is that you can press your car alarm. The car alarm makes an excellent security system that will help to scare off any would be assailants.
Security inside the apartment building is just as important out front. Don't make needless trips down to the laundry room or the mail room late at night, or alone. This is especially important with the laundry room, since there's often a back door or emergency exit that is close, where someone could sneak into the building. The laundry room is also very loud, so if you were to have an emergency, it's possible that people wouldn't be able to hear your distress. Just use common sense without getting too worried.
Aside from all of the common spaces, it's important to consider your apartment's home security, too. Are you on a lower floor of the building? Invest in double-locking windows, and make sure you don't leave them open when you are out of the apartment. Get to know your immediate neighbours, so that if there's ever trouble, you know they're on your side. A big no is leaving a spare key under a mat or out in the hallway, leave it with a trusted neighbour or better still a friend.
An apartment can be made just as secure as a house, just be sure to use caution and common sense when it comes to security.
