before making an expensive or long term commitment, online piano lessons might be a realistic option. However, before making any financial commitments make certain you understand exactly what to expect for what you are paying for.

There are a few online formats that might have value in the beginning. They are reasonably priced but shouldn't be relied on for long term. Videos can at least provide sound and can be repeated over and over. There are many online options that allow a teacher to offer classes with multiple students and everyone can still communicate with each other - something vital to the learning process.

Other online options, albeit much less expensive, are also much less reliable. These include ebooks and downloadable instructions and sheet music that you're supposed to read from and learn on your own. If you have any questions, however, or don't understand what you're reading, it's useless. Many would be pianists have tried this method and actually gave up further learning simply out of total frustration.

Of course, no type of instruction is of any value without at least a keyboard to practice on. Not everyone can afford a full size piano, and many homes and apartments don't even have the floor space for one. Not to mention the fact that many individuals do go out and purchase pianos only to find out they change their minds about their interest levels quickly.

Pricing for online lessons varies greatly. Be aware that lessons are no different than anything else: you get what you pay for. Anything that is free of very cheap is probably going to turn out to be useless.
