Tips On Sharpening Your Cigar Cutter

What is a cigar cutter and how sharp should it be

? This is a device that is used to cut off a cigar end so that the stick can be smoked. It is typically stored in a cigar humidor or a box. The cap side of the cigar is what you cut off, and a precise cut is necessary if you wish to burn it evenly. What should you know about cigar cutters?

There are three types of cutters: the guillotine cut, the punch cut and the V-cut. The first of these is the most common type of cutter, and ideal for smaller rings. Within this category is a double or single bladed cutter. The double bladed cutter and the cigar scissors blade are known to make cuts that are more precise. Though these are the less expensive brand, many prefer the punch cut variety. Within this category are three types: bullet punch, Havana punch and multi-punch. These blades tend to be recessed, or perhaps "spring out" upon a given action. The V-cut works similarly to a guillotine cutter but is able to cut a wedge into the cap instead of cutting it off completely. This makes a cleaner look and a thicker cigar smoke.

These cutters are very sharp and can slice through human skin with ease. So sharpening them on a regular basis isn't necessary. However, there may come a time when these cutters become dull from over use. If this happens, you may want to contact the company that sold you the product. Why? Because many of these companies offer lifetime guarantees on their products, with free sharpening deals. In this case, you simply return the item and they sharpen it.

Many of the newest models of cutters are self-sharpening, meaning that they can easily work a lifetime without the need for re-sharpening. However, if you use the device frequently you may dull the blade. In this case, you may find it advantageous to use a grinding wheel, mill file or a sharpening stone. Sharpening machines are usually the most precise option, though some individuals have used artificial carborundum and diamond steel just as well. You can also try to sharpen the blade the same way you sharpen a knife.

It really depends on (A) your enjoyment of the sharpening process and (B) whatever is cost-effective. Some cigar aficionados prefer to just send away their blades and get a professional sharpening from the manufacturer, than have to figure out the blade geometry. You can keep all of your accessories and blades in a humidor for your cigars. Isn't it about time you relaxed and took a few puffs?
