Use the automatic settings of your camera, if you are just a beginner. The common automatic settings options are portraits, landscapes, close ups, action, bright light, slow shutter. See the manual of the camera for all these options. The moment you get comfortable with these automatic settings, you can work with manual mode. Such actions would help you to be more familiar with the camera, and it will help you to create and understand creative shots.

Use flash according to the requirement, for instance you do not need flash if you are clicking the photographs in the afternoon as enough light is there outside. Use the natural light as much as possible to avoid the shadows. Avoid the shadow on the subjects. Do not click images with a light behind the subject.
