. It's also frustrating, annoying and confusing living in a foreign country because it's different. Both these sentences are true; and they are especially true in France. Visitors or new residents living in France will have a much more enjoyable time if they follow the handy tips listed below.
1.USE the language!
This is one of the most vital points to living in France successfully. The French people are very proud of their language. They even have a national institute that works unceasingly, if not always successfully, to keep foreign words out of the French vocabulary and to maintain the purity of the French language. Even if a foreigner's French is very poor, he or she must try to speak as much as possible. Not trying to use the French language is a guaranteed insult to the French people. Trying to use the language shows them that the foreigner respects the culture of France.
2.Accept the French way of doing things and avoid comparisons.
Usually everyone is proud of their own country and culture; and if not proud, then at least they consider their ways of behaving as "normal" or "correct." It is a very common for foreigners living in another country to be confused or annoyed by the habits and mores of the host country. It takes a lot of patience and good will to tolerate and accept the differences of another country.
3.Always greet neighbors and acquaintances.
Foreigners need to take the time to exchange friendly greetings with their neighbors. If a French person offers to shake hands, then the foreigner should shake hands. But if the French person offers a kiss on the cheek, the foreigner must respond in kind with a kiss on each cheek.
4.Respect position and hierarchy.
People in French society are very aware of social position and the hierarchy of titles, power, authority and responsibility. It is important to acknowledge and use titles
and to give respect to authority. In business dealing especially it is necessary to follow the chain of command in order to achieve a result.
5.Follow the same work patterns as the French.
Foreign workers should take regular lunch and coffee breaks, even if working on something important. In addition, all holidays and vacations should be taken. By following the same work patterns foreign worker shows respect and understand for the cultural values of the society.
6.Don't try to impress the French by speaking about money.
Social position is based on education, the ranking of your university and your acquaintances. As in most social settings, the discussion of how much money a person has is seen in France as the mark of a boorish and uncultured person.
7.Demonstrate your friendliness and desire to participate socially.
It is important for foreigners to introduce themselves to neighbors, go to community events and try to become involved. This point is related to number three. The French will assume that foreigners are not interested in them if there is no demonstrable effort to become involved.
For foreigners living in France successfully, as with living in any foreign country, is based on demonstrating respect for and interest in the ways of the country.
