Tips To Properly Transplanting Roses To A New Location

Roses are a common flower within many garden enthusiasts gardens

. Within your rose gardening, you may face the dilemma of whether or not transplanting the flowers is necessary. Regardless of whether you feel the flowers need more sunlight or you just want to mix things up a bit, it is vital you take the proper measures prior to transplanting roses.

The first step to transplanting roses is preparing the ground where you will be placing them. There is no point in digging up the plant from a perfectly good spot only to find out the new location will have too much sun or encourage the loss of moisture. Also, make sure the roots are covered with a damp piece of burlap if you will be moving or relocating the plant to a completely different location.

Something you have to be careful of when moving the plant is having it dry or wilt. Very few times will it survive if it becomes too dry or wilted. For this reason, it is extremely beneficial to water it well the day before digging it up. While there is nothing you can do about the loss of some of the roots that are deep into the soil, keeping the plant moist and full of water will increase its chances of survival.

Now that you have properly prepped the rose for its move it is time to start digging. It is crucial you take as much of the root ball as possible to maintain a strong and healthy plant. If you begin to notice your roses wilting at the tips following the move, you will want to increase the amount of water you typically deliver.

The next rose gardening tip that many are unaware of is adding a half to a full cup of bone meal to the hole where you will be placing the plant. Also, keep in mind the plant will settle into the hole after you have planted it. Therefore, make sure you plant it higher than it was before. Upon planting and watering the roses, gently press on the surface to eliminate air pockets.

It can be difficult determining when the right time of year is for transplanting roses. Just know that you are best off leaving them be during the growing season. One reason is because it is easier to do so while they are dormant as it reduces the risk of them going into shock. Additionally, the plant will be much smaller and far more mobile after the annual pruning.

Transplanting roses can be risky and difficult for some. As long as you follow the steps listed in this article and provide plenty of water to the plant, the roses should have no problem making it through the transition.
